Lutron’s Aurora Smart Dimmer prevents a conventional toggle switch from shutting off the power to any Philips Hue smart bulbs that connected to the switch. It can also wirelessly control those bulbs, including dimming them by rotating the knob. The switch is easy to add to an existing Wiz system, but has fairly limited functionality. It can only be used to turn the lights on or off with a press, and to raise and lower their brightness with a long press of each button. There’s no option for enabling preset lighting scenes, and we encountered a couple of strange issues with the Wiz app during the setup process.

That said, if you’re looking for a very simple and portable switch for Wiz lighting, this is what you’ll need. We can see it being particularly useful if your traditional wired light switches are poorly located, perhaps behind some furniture, and you want a replacement switch that is easy to install (providing you also have some Wiz smart bulbs, of course). In addition, the panel has built-in motion sensors, so it can turn lights on and off as you enter and leave a room; a small camera lets you use multiple Brilliant panels as video intercoms. Installation, as with most other smart switches, requires a neutral wire, but it's fairly straightforward. The switch includes an ambient light sensor (so it can be set not to come on in daylight) and a motion sensor to automatically trigger the light. The latter feature worked seamlessly. If you turn it off with the switch, after a few minutes it will engage the motion sensor again, or you can disable the sensor via the app in case you don't want it switched on in the middle of the night. From an installation point of view, you can use it to replace your old, traditional wall light switch as it fits in the same 86-type box, so you don't have to worry about making any major changes to your home's electrical system. Even if you don't have a three-way switch, there's an easy way to get around it; many smart light switch makers now offer a remote, or companion switch that's battery-operated. All you have to do is attach the switch to your wall using screws or adhesive — no wiring required. We experimented with using the switches in different rooms and with different combinations of lighting fixtures. With wired switches, it was a case of removing an old switch and wiring up the smart one, ensuring we carefully turned off the power and fitting the wires to the correct terminals of the new switch.
Which type of switch you buy depends on what you want from your lighting. Do you want color-changing bulbs, or do you just want remote control of your existing bulbs? If it’s the latter, then a smart switch like the Tapo will be perfect for your needs. Are smart light switches hard to install? With geolocation your smart home will know if you are in or away from your home. This means you can easily trigger events based on your location. If for example you are on your way home from work, once you enter a preset distance around your home your smart light switches will activate a scene and turn your lights on. So when you arrive home your porch and hallway lights can be on ready for you.If you would like to keep your existing light switches, you can install a mini-relay behind the switch or above the light fixture, which you can then control via a smart hub. If a light fixture is controlled by more than one switch — for example, when you have a light switch at the top and bottom of a set of stairs — then you'll need to get a three-way smart light switch. However, if there's only one switch controlling an outlet, you can get a "single pole" switch.
