The show toured the United Kingdom, beginning on 30 August 2010 at Northampton’s Royal Theatre and continuing until autumn 2011.[11] The tour starred Claire Sweeney as ‘the girl’ and was directed by Tamara Harvey. The script was again updated for the 21st century, and ‘the girl’ was rewritten as originating from Liverpool, like Claire Sweeney herself. The song list stayed closer to the original, although a new finale was added, “Dreams Never Run On Time”, itself a rewrite of the song “Somewhere, Someplace, Sometime” from the 2003 version. TELL ME ON A SUNDAY charts the romantic misadventures of a young English girl in New York in the heady days of the 1980’s. Brimming with optimism, she seeks success and love. But as she weaves her way through the maze of the city and her own anxieties, frustrations and heartaches she begins to wonder whether she’s been looking for love in all the wrong places. Jodie Prenger most recently starred in the National Theatre’s West End production of A Taste of Honey. Recent theatre work includes the national tours of Abigail’s Party, Shirley Valentine, Annie, Fat Friends The Musical, Tell Me On A Sunday and Calamity Jane. In the West End she has starred in Oliver! at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, One Man Two Guvnors at the Theatre Royal Haymarket and Spamalot at the Playhouse. She also appeared in Les Misérables which was the inaugural production at the Dubai Opera House. Jodie has also starred in pantomimes at the Liverpool Empire and Birmingham Hippodrome. Three years later, Song & Dance, with some adaptations by Richard Maltby, Jr., landed on Broadway with Bernadette Peters playing “the girl,” who was now known as Emma. Peters won her first Tony Award for her performance and the show garnered eight nominations in total, including nods for Best Musical and Best Score. Following its closure, on 28th April 1984, a special performance of Song and Dance featuring Sarah Brightman performing Tell Me on a Sunday was filmed at the Palace Theatre and later broadcast on UK television. Two years later, Tell Me On a Sunday was expanded into a two-act show, Song and Dance. The second act was a ballet set to Variations, a piece Lloyd Webber had written for his brother Julian, a cellist. Variations, based on Paganini’s “A Minor Caprice No 24” had premiered at the Sydmonton Festival in 1977, was a best-selling album, and its opening was used as the theme music for the popular television program The South Bank Show.

The one-woman show was first performed at the Sydmonton Festival in September 1979 starring Marti Webb, who had been appearing in Evita as the alternate for Eva Perón. A cast album of Song and Dance featuring a live recording of Marti Webb was released by Polydor in 1982.Tell Me on a Sunday was filmed live at the Royalty Theatre on January 28, 1980. According to The Daily Telegraph arts reviewer Keith Nurse, the audience of 400 people was comprised of invited “music and show-business” guests, who received free copies of the LP. The event was hosted by Bill Boggs, and accompanied by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The girl' is the only person who appears on stage, despite having conversations with her friends and writing letters to her mum. Tell Me on a Sunday continues to be performed around the world, and in 2021 was toured around the UK starring Jodie Prenger.
