About this deal

The modern English word harp comes from the Old English hearpe; akin to Old High German harpha. [59] A person who plays a pedal harp is called a "harpist"; [60] a person who plays a folk-harp is called a "harper" or sometimes a "harpist"; [61] either may be called a "harp-player", and the distinctions are not strict. a b c Boenig, Robert (April 1996). "The Anglo Saxon Harp". Spectrum. Vol.71, no.2. pp.290–320. doi: 10.2307/2865415. JSTOR 2865415. the traditional llanera harp, made of Cedar wood and has 32strings, originally of the gut, but in modern times are of nylon. It is used to accompany both dancers and singers playing joropo music, a traditional form of Venezuelan music, also known as llanera music. [36]

This harmonica is in the Key of C. Whilst it is suitable for the beginner, it is also positioned as an experienced player instrument. The comb is an injection-molded plastic that has the projected mouthpiece we discussed earlier. The 0.9mm recessed reed plates are made from brass and are mounted with screws. It has stainless steel covers, which have closed sides. It is made in Germany. Another method is to play in the key one whole tone above that of the harmonica. On a C-tuned harmonica, this would mean playing in the key of D. This is known as "slant harp" or "third position" playing, and results in the harmonica playing in dorian mode. This is much less intuitive as it requires the ability to bend notes completely accurately, and there are fewer useful chords available than in first or second-position playing. The technique offers many notes that are not achievable in the other positions without overblows, such as the blue note on the third degree, which may or may not be favorable depending on the circumstance. The bends available at the lower end of the instrument also make playing melodies in a D major scale relatively easy for those who have any semblance of proficiency at the bending technique, though most of the notes (all but the second and fourth, E and G) in the scale are on the draw, requiring great skill and strategy in exhaling, even more so than in crossharp. In addition to the M364 models with 12 holes, there is also the Hohner Marine Band M365 14-hole harmonica. The general dimensions of the 12- and 14- hole Hohner harmonicas are a bit bigger than regular diatonic harmonicas. The M36401 and M36501 harmonicas (in the key of C) are pitched one octave lower than the standard 10-hole C diatonic. Thus, hole-4 blow is the same pitch as hole-1 on a regular diatonic harmonica in the key of C. The Marine Band M36408 and M36508 (in G) are similar to a usual G diatonic, having the higher end expanded. It is also possible for harp players to tune the harmonica themselves. By making small scratches in a reed, the note played can be changed. It is possible to either get a higher or a lower note. Some harp players make extensive use of these modifications. One of the most famous examples is the harp solo on " On the Road Again" by Canned Heat, [1] on which the harmonicist, Alan "Blind Owl" Wilson, gets the minor third crossharp on the sixth drawn reed, which is normally the major second crossharp. There are books, toolkits and guides to tuning and harp customization available on the Internet; anyone interested in trying their hand at tuning should be prepared to sacrifice a few harmonicas during the learning process. The terminology for other positions is slightly more varied. It is possible, of course, to play in any of the modes and, using overblows and bends, it is possible to play in all 12 keys on a single diatonic harmonica, though this is very rarely done on a diatonic. Even if a player is capable of playing multiple keys on a single harmonica, they will usually switch harmonicas for different songs, choosing the right "position" for the right song so as to achieve the best sound. Even when the same notes can be achieved on a different key of harmonica, choosing different keys of harmonicas will offer a variety of options such as slides, bends, trills, overblows, overbends, and tongue splits. Breathing patterns are changed position to position, changing the difficulty of the transitions between one note to the next, and altering the ratio of blow notes and draw notes. The different starting place for each position limits or extends note options for the bottom and top octaves. Changing positions will allow the player to create a different sound overall. This is very much a budget level Hohner, and is one of the few Hohner harmonicas that are made in China. It is aimed at the starter and those learning to play Blues harmonica. For this reason, the Blues Bender has been designed to help the student bend the notes, hence the name. Where it is made is anybody’s guess, but wherever it is, it sounds ok. Not the best you will find, but for a starter and beginner, it is a decent sound. It also plays quite easily. If you are already comfortable with the basics of harmonica playing, feel free to skip over the beginner lessons, but I recommend you watch this segment for an explanation of the “Time-Dot” tab, and the segment titled “The Layout” so you’ll be familiar with the visual systems we’ll be using at various points throughout the course. And if you’re not familiar with music theory, don’t worry. Some of the greatest blues harp players of all time couldn’t read music. There’s a little theory here and there to help you get familiar with basic terms. The quality of the build in terms of its stability is good. It certainly isn’t going to fall apart. The sound will vary from higher grade instruments, but for many, that will be fine.

ISBN 90-04-09365-6.The standard diatonic harmonica is designed to allow a player to play chords and melody in a single key. Because they are only designed to be played in a single key at a time, diatonic harmonicas are available in all keys. Harps labeled G through B start (on hole 1 blow) below middle C, while Harps labeled D ♭ through F ♯ start above middle C (C 4). Here is the layout for a standard diatonic harmonica, labeled C, starting on middle C (C 4). This article possibly contains original research. ( September 2017) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message) The tone of this harmonica is influenced by its wooden comb, which gives it a rich and fuller sound. This is an MS harmonica or Modular system. That means that whilst it is designed for a certain sound and genre, and all the components are interchangeable. This means you can change the components to get the sound best for you.

While there are many variations of the 12-bar Blues, the most common and simplest chord progression is this: I I I IContinuing along the circle of fifths, fourth position, fifth position, sixth position and zeroth positions can be played, with the scales played in those positions indicated as follows: The blues scale is the foundation of blues harping no matter which position you decide to play in. All principle blues positions use notes from the blues scale so it’s important to develop some fluency in this pattern. It helps to locate the sweet notes you need, avoid the sour ones, and express yourself confidently in the blues idiom.
