About this deal

Nvidia RTX GPUs are professional graphics cards designed specifically for workstations. They are standard in most HP Z, Dell Precision, Fujitsu Celsius and Lenovo ThinkStation workstations, and are also offered in workstations from smaller manufacturers such as BOXX, Scan and Workstation Specialists. But these are no ordinary times. The ongoing global semiconductor shortage has meant supply of the RTX A4000 and RTX A5000 has been patchy to say the least. Since these ‘Ampere’ GPUs launched in Spring 2021, they have been very hard to get hold of. And some of the inflated prices we have seen online have been quite eye watering. At the time, this GPU was launched with little fanfare, and so we wanted just to take a moment and do a mini-review for the card. This is a mid-range NVIDIA professional GPU that would have been a NVIDIA Quadro in previous generations before that branding was retired. We just wanted to say thank you to PNY for allowing us to borrow this card. NVIDIA makes the GPU itself, but some of the photos are tagged PNY since the company is a primary distribution partner for NVIDIA’s professional GPUs. With that, let us get to the review. Rich, Expansive Visual Workspace If we head east on Abington Street we soon reach a roundabout with All Nations Church in the middle, which is where the A5123 and A4500 finally separate. We continue east along Wellingborough Road, which is briefly D2 until we reach the A4501 at traffic lights. The road then bends gently round to the left to the suburb of Abington. On reaching the park we are forced to turn left at traffic lights to reach a roundabout where we meet the A5095 and A5101 and turn right, still alongside the park to begin with.

There wasn’t a huge performance difference between the RTX A4500 and A5000 in our real time 3D tests. With our automotive test model in Autodesk VRED Professional, for example, the A5000 was between 1.75% and 3.10% faster than the A4500, depending on the level of anti-aliasing applied. It’s a very interesting time for professional workstation GPUs, and GPUs in general. While you might have your eye on a specific model in terms of features and price/performance, what you end up buying might be dictated more by what’s available in the channel. UK workstation manufacturer Scan, for example, currently has a ‘significant quantity’ of RTX A4500s available for workstation builds, while the RTX A5000 remains in short supply.

On the edge with the NVIDIA logo, there is an 8-pin power connector. Some of the higher-end professional GPUs use the data center GPU connector, but this still uses the consumer connector making it easily compatible with a range of power supplies. PNY NVIDIA RTX A4500 Top NVIDIA One might expect the AMD CPU to bring down scores slightly in some of our real-time 3D tests. However, as most of these benchmarks are very GPU limited, rather than CPU limited, we wouldn’t expect the CPU to influence the results that much. The NVIDIA ® RTX™ A4500 delivers the power, performance, capabilities, and reliability professionals need to do more. Powered by latest generation of NVIDIA RTX technology, combined with 20GB of ultra-fast GPU memory, the A4500 provides amazing performance with your favorite applications and the capability to work with larger models, renders, datasets, and scenes with higher fidelity and greater interactivity, taking your work to the next level. There’s also a difference in software. With special drivers, Nvidia RTX GPUs are certified for a range of professional applications and are tested by independent software vendors (ISVs) and the major workstation manufacturers. The Production Branch driver is a superset of the NVIDIA Studio Driver and provides all the benefits of the Studio Driver of the same version, along with NVIDIA RTX-specific enhancements and testing.

Its launch appears to have been driven largely by the silicon and components that Nvidia had at its disposal. In fact, this week at Nvidia’s GTC event, the company launched another new GPU, the Nvidia RTX A5500, a cut down version of the RTX A6000. Meanwhile, the RTX A3000 and RTX A2000 only obtained a memory upgrade. As their names denote, the RTX A3000 12GB and RTX A2000 8GB now have 12GB and 8GB, respectively, twice the memory of vanilla RTX A3000 and RTX A2000. It's not just more memory, but faster memory. The RTX A3000 12GB and RTX A2000 8GB supply up to 336 GBps and 224 GBps, respectively, 27% more bandwidth than the RTX A3000 and 17% on the RTX A2000. The NVIDIA RTX A4500 includes 56 RT Cores to accelerate photorealistic ray-traced rendering up to 2x faster than the previous generation. Hardware-accelerated Motion BVH (bounding volume hierarchy) improves motion blur rendering performance by up to 10X compared to the previous generation.
