Far darker and more malevolent than most bakeneko, the nekomata is said to have powers of necromancy, and upon raising the dead, will control them with ritualistic dances, gesturing with paw and tail. These yōkai are associated with strange fires and other inexplicable occurrences. The older and more abused a cat is prior to its transformation, the more power the nekomata is said to have. To gain revenge against those who wronged it, the spirit may haunt humans with visitations from their deceased relatives. Some tales state that these demons, like bakeneko, assume human appearances, usually appearing as older women, behaving badly in public, and bringing gloom and malevolence wherever they travel. Due to these beliefs, sometimes kittens' tails were cut off based on the assumption that if the tails could not fork, the cats could not become nekomata. One heads up for the iron beads is that you should never forget that taking them off is an option. By the time you have them, you should be leveled and experienced enough to know how to hold your own if you do need to take them off. I usually took them off in floors I wasn't too confident in my ability to clear without getting hit. Those floors were the shooting gallery floors and the parkour floors, mostly.

He is known to simply appear in people’s homes, sit down on people’s chairs, and smoke and drink tea as though he were the master of the household!

The mysterious Bakeneko prostitutes apparently rose as an urban legend from the case of a Bakeneko that was supposedly “working as a meshimori onna, a type of low-rent waitress/maid/prostitute, at the Ise Inn in the Shinagawa-juku area of Edo, one of the fifty-three stations of the Tōkaidō sea highway” in the late 1700s. This sea creature is usually described as having a huge dark head that just appears out of the water. It’s said that when it appears, it will break through any boat that is nearby and kill its passengers.
