About this deal

Holbein Artist’s Gouache is a more traditional medium that is ideal for those who prefer the texture and rewettable properties of a gum arabic binder, while Holbein Acrylic Gouache is a more modern medium that is ideal for those who want a waterproof, matte finish and the ability to layer and blend colors. They are also very fast-drying! Less than5 min and a thin layer will be dry on paper and the paint starts to harden on the palette. Unlike watercolor, gouache can provide full coverage of color. Not only that, but after it is applied to the paper, it will dry in a smooth and flat texture, which is why it works so well in certain types of illustrations. In addition, since this medium has a fast drying time like acrylic paint, and possesses an opaque appearance, you can even add layers of gouache to your composition to hide mistakes or create more depth. But before you start, it's important to have high quality paint on hand. The single pigments can be combined and mixed to create clean new colours. With tubes that are premixed (i.e. made from a combination of two or more pigments) there is a tendency for colours to become muddy in appearance sooner. In developing the Artist’s own color shades, the color selection will always give consistent reliable results without darkening or muddiness.

At the same time, acrylic gouache is easier to layer and can be used straight from the tube without any need to thin them with water. Main preservatives used in Holbein gouache are Benzisothiazoline and Thiabendazole at very low, not dangerous amounts. The composition is confirmed to be non-toxic.I imagine that the addition of one or two of the colours in this palette might be a little unexpected, too. For me, the bamboo green is a truly beautiful colour, but in its undiluted form is not often found in the natural environment. However, when I mixed Bamboo Green with other colours in limited palettes, I was able to get some surprising and really pleasing colours going. I experimented by putting Bamboo Green with Edo Violet and Orange Yellow, which are two colours I wouldn’t usually gravitate towards in my own practice. Mixing these enabled me to get some lovely warm and cooler browns, adding the colours in different quantities, as well as some soft olive greens – which are definitely colours I love to use. When layering these colours over the top of each other, both in their straight-out-the-tube form, and as washed out mixes – the pop of colour from the bamboo green was both enhanced and softened somehow, allowing for its brightness to feel more approachable. In summary, there is a range provided by this brand, of colours that would satisfy professional fine artists, to colours suitable for fashion students and designers who want a particular colour straight out of the tube. Maimeri Artist Gouache The paint is high quality and doesn’t use color enhancers which means that a little goes a long way, and its lightfastness means that the colors will remain vibrant and true over time. Holbein Acrylic Gouache is an opaque and highly-pigmented acrylic paint which dries to a velvety-matte finish. The colours are very popular with designers and artists, who love their superb quality. The paint is highly opaque and can be used on a variety of surfaces, including paper, board, and canvas.

The more single pigment colours, such as the cadmiums are more expensive than the premixed designer colours such as brilliant yellow. Winsor and Newton provide alternatives to the genuine cadmium colours that are non toxic. Firstly, the texture of the paints was very smooth and fluid, thinner in consistency than the buttery, heavy body acrylics. This made them very easy to use undiluted but I was concerned that this would mean that they wouldn’t be as opaque as I would like. I was pleasantly surprised that when not thinned down with water, they were very opaque, which really opens up possibilities when painting, such as adding highlights and details towards the end. You can see from my test that the white and yellow were slightly less opaque but a further layer of paint would sort that out. Gouache is not inherently opaque. Opacity comes from the pigments. Some pigments are naturally more opaque than others. For instance, cadmiums are naturally very opaque, whereas quinacridones and phthalos are inherently transparent. Therefore regardless of brand, the same colors will be less opaque. Most colors in the set are semi-opaque or opaque which means great coverage and layering in your painting.Currently, these paints are available to buy in the US, but there are limited suppliers that sell this in the UK and other countries. Holbein Artists’ Gouache A range of premixed colours and some fine artist single pigment colours. The bright premixed colours are aimed at designers. They will dry matte and solid in appearance. The colours come in 20ml tubes, larger than Holbein but smaller than Da Vinci, however the price is still pretty reasonable. While Holbein gouache is more expensive than some other brands of gouache, its quality and performance make it well worth for you.

Of Which have Excellent or Good Lightfastness (according to their own tests): 22 (All rated ‘excellent’) A test painting– I mostly focused on coastal scenes, as that is something I’m very passionate about, but I didn’t paint the same scene every time. The test paintings are done on toned beige paper because I think that shows me how opaque the colors are better than white paper. Paints do not contain any whitening agents which could be a cheap way to make a more opaque look. Holbein doesn’t cut corners with quality.

Without a doubt, Artist gouache ranges are more expensive per ml than Designer gouache ranges. Their dependence on high quality, lightfast pigments is possibly one reason for this. Designer Gouache paints may contain a higher proportion of Titanium White or opacifying agents which are inexpensive and help keep the cost down for the artist. I use these brands because they are extremely opaque and have a beautiful consistency. But while doing these brand comparison tests, I found out there is a wide range of consistencies in gouache brands. If you like one of the brands I don’t like, it’s because we are used to different consistencies, and that’s OK! Honestly you can get used to anything with enough practice. All Holbein colors are highly pigmented and made of finest pigments that guarantee stable quality and coverage. i started noticing a difference in the quality of w&n paints a few years ago. it is getting progressively worse.

Daniel Smith’s ‘Wisteria’ next to Daler Rowney’s ‘Saffron Green’. Both are mixtures of pigments that could be mixed from scratch, but which can be useful to have ready-made

About Me

One of the only colours with a lower lightfast rating is the Alizarin Crimson, which is a notoriously fugitive pigment. The brand offers cadmium colours, but doesn’t offer alternatives as Winsor & Newton does. None of the paints in the 12 colors set contains cadmium (but still not enough to be considered toxic in any form for humans)
