About this deal

Lost overboard, Edward Tulane begins an unpredictable adventure during which his pompous character becomes scuffed, worn and...

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo describes the incredible adventures of a rabbit. Edward, the rabbit, begins as a very selfish porcelain doll (well, rabbit) and becomes a loving, affectionate toy for the kids who need him most. One of the most essential parts of being human is interaction with others. Through these interactions, most learn how to have compassion and empathy for the lived experiences of others. An important lesson in the novel that Edward learns is that compassion makes life richer. Edward leaves Abilene not really feeling that he can love another, and he rarely listens to her stories. By the end of the novel, Edward's capacity for compassion has exploded, and he loves hearing the trials and woes of others. He feels compassion when he hears their stories, and this compassion shows him that he can love others. Loss Abilene speaks to Edward as though he is alive, and so does Abilene's grandmother, Pellegrina. When Abilene was seven, Pellegrina commissioned Edward and then gives him to Abilene. There are over 50 academic vocabulary words included in the instructional guide for this novel. These include general academic vocabulary and skill-specific vocabulary. For advanced readers, the notebook prompts can be used to generate a longer, more detailed response to the daily prompt. This pushes the students to analyze and defend their answers. What charmed me about this book was having it read to me in 20 minute segments at night by one of my grand children. And seeing how the book spoke to her much-less-jaded heart, and how she rejoiced in the ending. And hearing the beauty of the 'story telling voice' in this book that does not shrink from a sophisticated vocabulary in choosing the right word over the simpler word. Nellie is the wife of Lawrence, the fisherman whose net rescues Edward from the bottom of the ocean after 290 days. Although Edward is at first ''horrified'' at Nellie's mistaking him for a girl and renaming him Susanna, he grows to enjoy his life with the older couple. Nellie enjoys baking, and while she bakes, she talks to Edward about her life. Unfortunately, Edward's peaceful time with Nellie is cut short when her daughter Lolly visits and takes Edward to the dump.

The story soars because of DiCamillo’s lyrical use of language and her understanding of universal yearnings. This will be a pleasure to read aloud. predict who will rescue Edward next and how they will treat him, perhaps creating a new chapter for the story; Edward begins his journey by travelling on The Queen Mary passenger liner, a ship that was in service from 1936 to 1967. Use this opportunity to explore the 1930s depression era in both America and the United Kingdom. How did it affect the rich and the poor? Can clues be found in the episode Edward spends in the company of a tramp named Bull? Or when he is the much loved plaything of a child called Sarah Ruth, whose father is a broken man?Through his interactions with his first owner, Abilene, the reader gets a clear picture of how selfish and unloving he is. It isn't long before he's separated from her, and throughout the remainder of the story, he's bounced around between the various people who save him.
