About this deal

Elizabeth is rather a secondary character when all is said and done, so if you're looking for an Elizabeth-centered novel, this isn't quite it. It's more about Dudley, and the two women who loved him concurrently.

As a new queen, Elizabeth I faces two great dangers. The French threaten to invade Scotland. But more perilous still is her passion for the convicted traitor, Robert Dudley. Dudley is already married. Amy, his wife, refuses to set her beloved husband free to marry the queen, but she cannot prevent him from becoming the favourite of the plotting, pleasure-seeking court. Yet the queen must marry. The Queen’s Lover is based on Fersen’s archives, especially his correspondence with Marie Antoinette. The letters were printed nearly 100 years after Fersen’s death though – sadly for historians – intimate sections were redacted by the puritanical publisher. Many other paragraphs are still unread because their invisible ink cannot be developed. In 1974, the rival sound system owner Lloydie Coxsone invited Mark to enter Star Search, a weekly talent contest held at the Four Aces nightclub in Dalston, east London, where she won first prize 10 weeks in a row.

Mercury said writing about love was “actually limitless” and he believed that two of his most treasured love songs – “I Was Born to Love You” and “Love Me Like There’s No Tomorrow” – were from his 1985 solo album Mr. Bad Guy. He said they were both very personal songs, full of strong emotions. May agreed with Mercury’s evaluation and said he was “obsessed” with creating a new Queen version of the former song after Mercury’s death in November 1991. The idea of Marie Antoinette is one of legend. Her grace. Her beauty. Her charm. There have been many stories told of the young queen- some of truth, some of misquoting. However, what every story told has in common is the inability to deny that she commanded a room in a quiet, powerful way with not just her beauty, but her charisma as well. She is the queen for which men found themselves speechless in her presence, and, because of this, she is the queen of which stories of scandal have surrounded her. The Queen’s Lover begins at a masquerade ball in Paris in 1774, when the dashing Swedish nobleman Count Axel Von Fersen first meets the mesmerizing nineteen-year oldDauphine Marie Antoinette, wife of the shy, reclusive prince who will soon become Louis XVI. This electric encounter launches a life-long romance that will span the course of the French Revolution. Written as a memoir, Count Axel von Fersen’s story is presented to us as an edited version published by Sophie, his sister. Hence, there are passages and chapters interjected by Sophie’s account of what happened as well as those by Axel himself. The historical details are incredibly palpable bringing you a sense of actually being there. There’s a huge hole in the industry where they used to be, a space that can never be replaced. They were both excellent performers.
