About this deal

We also get some characters brought in along the way that I felt we learned too much about with not enough pay off from them. Again, they may very well return down the road, but otherwise, it came off as a lot of space taken up for other characters, instead of moving the story along. This is the perfect continuation of the haunted series. Though it is the second book of the series, it's actually the prequel of the original book. If you have already read it, the previous book Perron Manor mentions the massacre that happened in 1982 on Halloween night. The book lays down the context of what happened here and the whole motive behind it. I’ve read a lot of Splatterpunk and Extreme Horror in my time. I’m certainly not against the spilling of guts. But I admire an author who can turn the camera away and give me a different kind of fear even more than one who can twist my insides in disgust. Lee Mountford has taken to heart the age-old lesson that what you don’t see is far scarier than what you do. He never oversteps the mark, which many horror authors do, where the plot then descends into parody, and even at the tense conclusion of the novella what is waiting for Ritter never quite steps into the light… Coupled with this intuitive sense of when not to show us something, or when to let the silence speak, is a concise descriptive power. Many of the “scares” in this book are classic horror fare: faces in windows, shadows at the end of the bed, and yet Mountford will often offer up just one subtle little detail that sets his image apart from the generic. For example,

Sarah Pearson and her team are sent on their first assignment together—to investigate a case of possession in Kutná Hora, Czech Republic. I listened to the audio book version of this prequel. Narrated by Hannibal Hills, the audio is about 3.5 hours long. Hills has a pleasant voice, reads at a nice pace and does an excellent job of voice acting! I enjoyed his performance from beginning to end. No complaints; this was a perfect follow-up to the first book. These really are fun, popcorn reads that serve as perfect palette cleansers! I was really delighted by the fact that it serves as a prequel to the first book and answers a few questions about Chloe and Sarah's pasts, and the house itself. Most of them decided that the children had been faking their experiences, as one of them had admitted to doing so on one occasion, but the Warrens were different. This book ensnares the story of a tragic massacre that took place in 1982 which happened on Halloween night.

By the end of the novel, the characters were starting to grow on me, and some scenes with them were more "believable" than they were in the first three-quarters or so. Experience supernatural horror in the vein of THE CONJURING, INSIDIOUS and the legendary GHOSTWATCH. THE DEMONIC will get under your skin, send chills down your spine and have you sleeping with the lights on! Something beyond her understanding waits for her there, lurking in the shadows. An evil that intends to kill her family and claim her very soul. All of that is compounded when they find a study upstairs, filled with occult items and a strange book written in Latin. This is where the story differs from the movie as there was no exorcism-like practice from the Warrens. In 1979, two years after they began, the hauntings abruptly stopped, though the family maintains they did nothing to stop them. Which for this reader was a crying shame, as the story promised a lot more for at least 89% of the book (and from 96% onwards...)

At first the ghosts, or demon spirits as the Warren investigators thought of them, were harmless. Described variously as opaque or somewhat solid in appearance, there were many spirits present in the old homestead. One ghost smelled of flowers while another would gently kiss the girls goodnight in their beds every night. Another appeared to be a small, young male that the girls would watch, mesmerized, push toy cars about the room propelled by an invisible hand. His use of character is also something to be admired, as Mountford focuses on realistic people in otherworldly situations. Coupling this with a dark and moody use of atmosphere, he definitely knows how to create a foreboding sense of ambiance. There’s a lot of subtleties hidden just underneath the surface of each of his stories, as well as being entertaining and highly engaging to read. With a lot more to follow still, he’s definitely a writer with plenty more to say, as he will continue to write and publish for a long time yet. When we begin, Chloe and her younger sister Sarah, have inherited the Manor from their reclusive Uncle Vincent. The last tragedy recorded there was when Chloe was only six years old, and was staying there as her parents helped her Uncle and his partner, Marcus. Having no recollection of anything during that time, Chloe doesn't hesitate to urge her husband to move there, along with their young child, and co-heir sister. Because these four friends have wandered into the territory of the violent, grotesque Webb family. A group of psychopaths who have a taste for human meat. And they are hungry! This book was one scary ride and author, Lee Mountford slowly builds up the haunting and spooky atmosphere all the way through the book then lowers the boom as things escalate in the manor to the point that I would stay up to the early morning hours reading it! While I thoroughly enjoyed the first book, which takes place well after the events of this one, everything about this book is better. The character development, pacing, and horror elements almost perfectly mash together to create a thrilling and horrifying read. My main issue with the first book, which is that not enough things really happened, is thrown out the window here. Lots of stuff happen, but not too much. Like I said, the pacing is almost flawless. According to Andrea, the family experienced other spirits as well that smelled like rotting flesh and would cause beds to rise off the floor. She claims her father would enter the basement and feel a “cold, stinking presence behind him.” They often stayed away from the dirt-floored cellar, but the heating equipment would often fail mysteriously, causing Roger to venture down.

It’s gross and gory and suspenseful and everything I love! Throughout the day I would stop what I was doing just to keep reading!” It’s magical,”Andrea Perron, one of five daughters that lived in the house with her parents, told Rhode Island’s NBC 10 News. “It’s a portal cleverly disguised as a farmhouse. It’s multiple dimensions, interacting simultaneously.” Do the sisters and Andrew make it out of the house? Why is the manor haunted? What is haunting the manor? What happens to this family when the haunting escalates? No spoilers here as you will just have to read the book!In addition to ghostly entities, the Perrons’ witnessed many other odd and unexplained phenomena. Beds would levitate several inches off of the floor, telephone handsets would hover in the air and slam down onto the phone base when someone entered the room, and various household objects would glide about the house on their own. Often chairs would be pulled suddenly from beneath an unsuspecting guest and pictures would tumble from the walls. The Perrons’ once reported seeing an orange ooze blood and a wall dissolve into nothingness. Why drop a star - the ending, but not the denouement - the denouement left me with more chills... however the ending left me cold - in the worst possible way I stopped caring about the characters because they started making completely bone-headed out-of-character decisions, and then there is Sarah, heavily foreshadowed as falling under the malign influence of the house, just isn't during the ending when I expected that foreshadowing to be revealed, and for no special reason I could see... geez this was anti-climatic. Overview: Lee Mountford is the new voice of British Horror. He has created a universe where the modern world battles creatures from the darkest realm imaginable. Sarah Pearson and Father Luca Janosch are sent to the asylum in West Virginia, America, after the Church receives a mysterious letter stating that ancient secrets lie beneath the facility. Secrets that only Sarah can uncover. It started small. Carolyn would notice that the broom went missing, or seemed to move from place to place on its own. She would hear the sound of something scraping against the kettle in the kitchen when no one was in there. She’d find small piles of dirt in the center of a newly-cleaned kitchen floor.
