About this deal

The Cyrus soundBuds have the right tonal makeup. I’ve been comparing them to the Sennheiser IE 40 Pro, a pair of “pro” wired earphones from a leading headphone maker. Side by side, both pairs sound fairly lean and clean, without the inflated low-end and smoothing used to make mass-market earphones easier on the ear. The developers at Cyrus Audio Ltd. have used Bluetooth 4.2 for the Cyrus soundBuds, which allows signal transmission via HFP v1.7, HSP v1.2, A2DP V1.3 ACRCP V1.6. SoundMagic has released a pair of true wireless in-ears that offer decent sound-per-pound value. If this is the extent of your budget, you’ll get a competitive battery life, one of the lightest and most comfortable earbuds we’ve tested to date and an expansive listen that betters the cheaper Cyrus soundBuds.

Yes, standard stereo sound may only have two channels, but earphones with better definition than these can make sound imaging seem a lot more intricate than that. However, for just a little extra outlay you could own the Award-winning Cambridge Audio Melomania 1s– and their claim to the throne has yet to be seriously challenged. Underneath it is another box containing the accessories for the Cyrus soundBuds, above all a bag containing two ear molds, so that with those that are already on the Cyrus soundBuds at the factory, a total of three of these parts are included. Also a transport case can be found here, which can be tied up with a strap. Tiny transport box…The soundBuds 2 launched near the beginning of 2021, around a year after the original Cyrus soundBuds. The Cyrus soundBuds 5.8 mm drivers provide for good sound, which is quite remarkable considering the very, very compact dimensions. In these drivers, the developers rely on a diaphragm in a so-called double-layer structure made of unspecified polymer, driven by powerful nedoymium magnets. If you now add the electronics plus 3.7 V 55 mAh lithium-ion batteries, it is remarkable that the earplugs weigh only 4.5 g.

The soundBuds2 design is outfitted with soft ear hooks, so you can listen comfortably for as long as you like. The snug and stable fit, coupled with heavy-duty water resistance (IPX5), also make the soundBuds2 an excellent match for sports and exercise. Whether you prefer to go to the gym or exercise outdoors, you won’t have to worry about sweat or getting caught in the rain. Their “non fall out” fit making them almost impossible to lose. We’re here again… what feels like headphones season. We’ve seen a good number of new headphones these past few weeks, and we’re absolutely loving seeing what companies are coming out with, old and new. In the case of Cyrus, they’ve recently released their new soundBuds 2, with some brand new improvements over the original soundBuds. A choice of three soft tips and a special in-ear grip holds the soundbuds 2 in place even during vigorous exercise. They are IPX5 Rated to prevent sweat form damaging them. Improved Touch Controls

Battery life is rated at an unremarkable five hours per charge, and the case holds enough power for three additional charges. You can confidently do without cables, and more and more manufacturers are also convinced of this when it comes to in-ear headphones. Surprisingly, one of them is now a company that has not been active in this area before, namely the English high-end hi-fi manufacturer Cyrus Audio Ltd. They are putting the Cyrus soundBuds in the race for the customers’ favour. Three pairs of tips are included in the box, and a couple of sets of silicone hooks, which stabilise the Cyrus soundBuds 2 in your ears. They’re optional in theory, but the earpieces look like they’re missing a piece without them attached.

Whereby, something has to be taken with caution over hours, because the very small dimensions of the Cyrus soundBuds naturally lead to the fact that you have to make do with a comparatively short battery life. Only about 2.5 hours of continuous music enjoyment is guaranteed here; as a pure hands-free device it would last about three hours. That’s not really a lot, even if in combination with the transport box as a mobile charging station for charging three times away from the power outlet, a total of eight hours of playing time results. In standby, it’s enough for up to 80 hours, so that you can largely do without a power adapter, at least for short trips. Before you actually use the Cyrus soundBuds, you should choose the best fitting variant from the unfortunately only three attachments, the so-called Ear Tips. The Cyrus soundBuds are made of silicone and have a special shape. This does not apply to the part that is pushed directly into the auditory canal, which is quite conventional. Instead, the Ear Tips of the Cyrus soundBuds have a kind of small bow that helps to hold the Cyrus soundBuds particularly securely in the ear, in this case they are “anchored” in the auricle. The manufacturer refers to this as soft hooks. You don’t have to worry that this could be annoying in any way; on the contrary, they offer excellent wearing comfort. If we anticipated the audiophile sound quality that we’ve come to expect from the Cyrus brand, we didn’t quite find it in the soundBuds. At this level though, that’s no surprise at all. So it is quite clear that one manufacturer after the other has come up with such solutions in recent months, first and foremost, of course, proven headphone specialists, but interestingly enough also many a manufacturer who has so far made little or no appearance in the headphone sector, including the English high-end hi-fi manufacturer Cyrus Audio Ltd.The Cyrus soundBuds 2’s dynamics are far more limited, making music sound flat and rhythmically inert. It isn’t much the tonal makeup of these earphones that’s the issue; but that they can’t deliver tunes with all that much drive or energy. We cue up FKA Twigs’ 2014 debut album LP1 on Tidal and our initial reaction is that there’s an awful lot to like. Solo voices in Preface are full-bodied and their ethereal choral accompaniment is presented within a detailed, expansive, layered mix. Computer-generated blips flash from left ear to right and even from overhead to just below our left shoulder.

There are also more significant issues with mid-range quality. The Cyrus soundBuds incite upper-mid sibilance quite frequently, and mid detail is limited and rudimentary. They lasted for 4hrs 20mins of music at normal listening volume, which is excellent for a true wireless pair. The results appeared a little too good, actually, so I ran the test again, this time in a single non-stop session. The Lypertek PurePlay Z3 were my main point of reference in A/B comparisons. It’s a set of earbuds I’ve recommended most often in the past year to people who want an affordable no-nonsense wireless buds. The soundBuds come from a true enthusiast hi-fi brand. As a result, expectations for their sound quality are set pretty high, even if they cost about 10% of the price of the average Cyrus product.
