Priests and monks began to settle on the peninsula at the end of the 8th century. Now it is home to 2,000 monks who live within its 20 monasteries. Though it has always been considered Greek, it has been contested a number of times. During the Ottoman Empire, it fell to the Turks, but the Greek military later emancipated it. Some of the places mentioned in this Atlas were completely new to me.

These and many more instances are captured in this fascinating book full of strange geographical intrigue. So small and insignificant is this Russian exclave that it is left off most maps. But don’t count on Russia abandoning it. The Greek constitution recognises the Monastic State as a self-governing territory of the Greek state. The governor it sends to Athos is merely an observer. He adds: ‘The Moroccan authorities consider all of these territories to be the remainders of Spanish colonial occupation and that they should be returned immediately.’
Overall though I enjoyed the book. It’s an undemanding read for those who (like me) enjoy learning about these quirkier aspects of international politics.The second story tells why the port is called Daphne. Ironically, for what is now an all-male territory, it was named after Daphne, daughter of the Arcadian King. When Apollo fell in love with her, Daphne ran to away to the island to resist temptation and protect her virginity. One is the Northwest Angle, the only territory of the United States, except Alaska, that lies to the north of the 49th parallel, Mr Nikolic points out.
