About this deal

On 11 November 2009, The Guardian reported that the BBC had adapted Money for television as part of its early 2010 schedule for BBC 2.

An extraordinary novel that ratifies Martin Amis’s standing as a force unto himself, as The Washington Post has attested: There is, quite simply, no one else like him.

In a review of Saul Bellow’s work, Amis remarks admiringly that, "To evolve an exalted voice appropriate to the twentieth century has been the self-imposed challenge of his work". He is a regular contributor to numerous newspapers, magazines and journals, including the Sunday Times, The Observer, the Times Literary Supplement and the New York Times. British Council complies with data protection law in the UK and laws in other countries that meet internationally accepted standards. Throughout, he offers razor sharp takes on such subjects as:American politics: ‘If history is a nightmare from which we are trying to awake, then the Reagan era can be seen as an eight year blackout. Somber en ongewoon, veral die tweede, oor 'n dierbare klein hondjie wat sy plek probeer vind tussen mense iewers in 'n apokaliptiese toekoms.

They didn't hold a meeting: it was simply a matter of a few dozen exhausted and terrified husbands - all the Toms and Tims and Tams - sprinting with messages from hut to hut. The concepts are simple enough so the beauty is in the language and the way things are observed and described, rather than some radical new chain of thought or insight into the world, the human condition and so on. Between the death of the one and the birth of the other, much water will flow by, a long night of chaos and desolation will pass. Experience (2000), an autobiography that often focuses on his father, was acclaimed for an emotional depth and profundity that some reviewers had found lacking in his novels.

Amis regularly appeared on television and radio discussion and debate programmes and contributed book reviews and articles to newspapers. He was Literary Editor of the New Statesman between 1977 and 1979, publishing his third novel, Success, in 1978. The second project, a new untitled novel which Amis was working on, was an autobiographical novel about three key literary figures in his life: the poet Philip Larkin, American novelist Saul Bellow, and noted public intellectual Christopher Hitchens.

It's not-knowing-where-to-look bad … like your favourite uncle being caught in a school playground, masturbating" ( The Guardian, August 2003).Later novels included The Pregnant Widow (2010), Lionel Asbo: State of England (2012), The Zone of Interest (2014), and Inside Story (2020). Martin Amis: 'Women have got too much power for their own good', The Daily Telegraph, 2 February 2010. His novels and short stories chart a world that is uniquely his: as John Updike puts it, ‘Amis is trying to construct a large, reaching, ambitious set of books trying to cover the world in fiction’. High-profile episodes such as the break with his agent over the size of an advance on one novel brought accusations of avarice and greed; marital discord was taken to confirm the identification between author and the more the unsavoury male figures of his novels.

Two early stories from the 70's ( Denton's Death and the updated title story) baffled us completely. Ironischerweise sind es aber eben die weniger grossspurig daherkommenden Erzählungen in diesem Band, die bleibenden Eindruck machen und ihren Verfasser jenseits aller karikierenden Überzeichnung als reifen Autor ausweisen. Night Train is written in the language of American ' noir' crime fiction, but subverts expectations of an exciting investigation and neat, satisfying ending.A lifelong smoker, Amis died from oesophageal cancer at his house in the US state of Florida in 2023. As the New York Times puts it, its “rollicking, repulsive picture of London and New York in the late 20th century, awash in cash, corruption, pornography, junk food, junk art, self-promotion and wretched excess of every imaginable variety” was borne forth on a devastatingly effective overflow of virtuosic sentences.
