About this deal

Caimh’s imagination seems to be limitless as the reader is literally taken on a journey of smoke and mirrors. If you enjoy your fantasy on the quirkier side, are ok with outlandish theories and love a good talking dog whose actually a human then I cannot recommend this series enough.

You can have too much of a good thing, and for me, this constant back and forth of sarcasm and witty retorts dragged conversations on longer than they should have. McDonnell brings us his standout cast of characters, we get the same main cast from The Stranger Times as well as cameos from some of our standout side characters, but what I love is that with each book he seems to take us deeper into the world of the magical. Hannah herself is undergoing some momentous changes: her meeting with a very different ex-husband Karl ends with her booking a stay at the Pinter Institute, an exclusive retreat where she experiences a very shaky start by falling flat on her face.

The missing person is an ex-contributor to the paper and their colleagues have the tough job of working out which article has clearly upset the wrong people. Floating statues, hijacked ghosts, homicidal cherubs, irate starlings, Reliant Robins and quite possibly several deeply sinister conspiracies; all-in-all, a typical week for the staff of The Stranger Times.

The scene is set for another rollercoaster ride through more strangeness with the Founders and the Folk.

With a motley crew of staff, the newspaper is considered by many to be nothing more than a rag, a joke to society. In addition I really enjoy how the different volumes of this series tie into each other, picking up old characters, develop the main characters and introduce new ones, while also being good stories on their own. I would thoroughly recommend this series to lovers of Brookmyre, Pratchett or Urban Fantasy in general. At the start of this book we are told that Hannah, the protagonist of the last two has gone back to her scumbag of a husband without ceremony. We do have some sort of a case in every book to move the plot, but also there is an overarching thing going on.
