To make things worse, Van Damme's arsenal of simple English words is so small that at times it is truly painful to watch him confront his opponents. The movie builds nicely to a very intense, and ridiculously intense, finale that takes place in a ‘Mardi Gras Graveyard' (which is a warehouse full of old parade floats) that proves to be the perfect place for Woo to unleash his considerable talent for staging high octane gun-fu sequences that are, if not particularly realistic, pure eye candy in the best possible way. With the blend of balletic martial arts action, overly dramatic slow motion, and a parade of practical effects stuntwork, Hard Targetdelivers from start to finish. Normally I wouldn’t do this, but this is where I feel the need to justify my high rating of this film a wee bit. Grain exposure is fine, but I much prefer the tighter appearance of the visuals that materializes in native 4K, which has a significant positive effect on fluidity as well. It's a shame really, because there are some impressive DV tones, particularly in brake lights and street lighting, popping like this film has never popped before, but it's simply unwatchable. The film's warm color scheme is reproduced quite nicely and we get strong black levels evident throughout.The start off by noting the similarities to The Most Dangerous Game as well as Cannon Film's Avenging Force, how they both came to know John Woo's cinema, the MPAA's issues with the film and its violence and the differences between the R-rated cut and the unrated cut included here, John Woo's earlier workprint cut that runs two hours plus, the film's score, the stunt work featured in the picture and, of course, plenty of details about Van Damme's career and work in this picture.

On June 26, 2023, Universal Pictures (UK) will release a New 4K UHD + Blu-ray for John Woo and Jean-Claude Van Damme’s 1993 actioner Hard Target. and uses 10-bit video depth, High Dynamic Range in both HDR10 and Dolby Vision flavours and is encoded using the HEVC (H. Brand New 4K Restoration of the Unrated International Cut – From a 4K Scan of the Original Camera Negative!

Most of the action and stunts in the first half to two-thirds of the film are very over-the-top and ludicrous, but more so of Van Damme’s oeuvre than Woo’s. But Chance quickly learns that the old man was actually killed by wealthy hunters in a game organized by a ruthless businessman (Lance Henriksen, The Terminator, No Escape). Unfortunately we are STILL waiting on the very FIRST UNCUT EDIT of the film to be released 😞 As you may or may not be aware, but even tho this film has been sold since original VHS release as a ‘Full uncut version’ it is in fact NOT the FULL uncut version.

Several cuts later and we had a film with considerably less violence and also more of a focus on Van Damme, at the expense of the other actors: reportedly even Van Damme himself sat down with the editors to deliver an alternative cut, which trimmed away the development of the antagonists in the film in favour of more of himself, allegedly because "audiences were paying to see Van Damme, not Lance Henriksen". I think that it is extremely similar to what you would see on the old Blu-ray release, but with all primaries and supporting nuances looking much healthier, fresher, and ultimately better balanced. The film reportedly has around 20 minutes of footage STILL missing from its original version submitted to the MPAA. The outdoor footage in particular has significantly better ranges of nuances that are part of an overall superior dynamic range, so if you perform a direct comparison with any area with outdoor footage from the old Blu-ray release, you will see a pretty impressive uptick in quality. A videophile is not only a voracious consumer of movies, TV shows, and other forms of home media content, but demands the best possible visual and audio presentation quality for them in the home environment. Laced with dark humour and slam-packed with electrifying action, Hard Target is a must-see for action fans. Woo's trademarks are all present and correct: yes, slo-mo and freeze-frame, but also doves (well, pigeons), two-handed gunplay, back-to-back confrontations (where two characters trade words as they reload, separated only by a thin partition), and the lead character anticipating the actions of others through reflections in mirrored objects. Attractive and talented, she enjoyed parts in other action movies before headlining the underrated Witchblade series - but she’s never really had that huge star-making movie role.
