This craft gin is rich, smooth and complex, with outstanding notes of earthy juniper, sweet orange and spicy red cole, with a fresh and lingering finish. In 1960 the Greenalls moved to a larger premises to keep up with the demand of the Gin, almost 200 years after the Dakin distillery was first opened. Distinctively rich with a touch of smokiness, made from the most exceptional malt and grain whiskies of Scotland.

The 11 botanicals include juniper orange peel, grapefruit, angelica, liquorice, cubeb, English coriander and uniquely, the root botanical red Cole (the 18th century name for horseradish).v=1650103866","options":["Size"],"media":[{"alt":null,"id":6698779770931,"position":1,"preview_image":{"aspect_ratio":1. As a juniper-led gin, I was expecting a lot of juniper on the nose and resulting flavour, but what I was not expecting was how well integrated it was with a triumvirate of citrus notes; orange, lemon and lime, so refreshing.

In 1788 Edward, Thomas' son became a founding member of the Amicable Society which was an 18th century drinking club, where he met Edward Greenall of the then brewing family. In 1761, before the outset of the Industrial Revolution, he pioneered the development and refinement of high quality English gin, before anyone else. It was about 18 months ago that this fine gin from Greater Manchester was launched; describing itself as “a classic style juniper-led gin” and whose namesake created the world’s first quality English gin and founded the world’s oldest gin distillers in 1761, so why am I so enthralled by it? Horseradish, or red cole as it was known in Dakin’s day, was used to revive weary travellers journeying by coach and horses from London to Scotland“.

These fresh, 100% natural flavours combine to create a gentle, aromatic taste layered with zesty citrus, delicate nutty oils, rich exotic spices and a hint of sweetness. This premium gin is handcrafted using 11 of the finest, carefully selected botanicals (juniper, orange peel, english corriander, angelica, grapefruit, cubebs, liquorice and a hint of red cole), which are added by hand to the grain-neutral spirit with demineralised water inside the distilleries baby copper pot still to create a refreshing gin of unmistakable character. This time it was bought for me so I decided to try it with a pair of Fever Tree tonics: Aromatic and Mediterranean. Thomas Dakin Gin is presented in a distinctive square bottle inspired by 18th century bottle designs with heavily embossed back and sides, while a red label with raised vintage letterpress-style label typography almost entirely covers the front.

Thomas Dakin is a small batch gin of unmistakable character handcrafted using the finest botanicals and inspired by Thomas Dakin, the forefather of quality English gin. His inventive and enlightened outlook created a superior quality spirit and an unrivalled and distilling legacy. The first thing I love about this gin is the bottle; an embossed and squared off tinted in grey smoked glass with bold red labels; it really stands out and harks back to a time long gone where producers sought to stand out through small design tweaks available to them at the time. Handcrafted in a baby copper pot still, Thomas Dakin is a traditional juniper-led gin with notes of sweet orange and citrus, enlivened by an infusion of distinctive red cole (horseradish), a root botanical used in refreshing cordials in 18th century northern England, which gives our gin its long, lingering finish. This cookies is installed by Google Universal Analytics to throttle the request rate to limit the collection of data on high traffic sites.
