About this deal

He believes strongly in the teachings of the Koran, but traditions of Afghanistan, and peer pressure from the country's ways have him confused. I just didn't believe the writing of this author, she lost me when she didn't take the time to understand the Afghans she was trying to portray. Due to my love of reading I thought I would set up a blog to share with people my thoughts on the books i've read. It was an enjoyable read, it just had its flaws which stopped it from being the brilliant read I believe it had the potential to be.Our group thought these might be shining a light on some of the conditions faced by women in Afghanistan; exploring cultural differences; highlighting the importance of kindness and showing the power of love. But the repercussions of a traumatic childhood far from home have left her struggling for her way in life. She came all the way from America to raise money for an orphanage that could very well be a front for something sinister. Time is compressed, relationships move fast, and the normal patterns of waiting before you talk intimately are foregone. The cafe needs to make money and so Sunny hosts a kind of event night where they invite women to come and speak.

Her sister Layla has become an outspoken women's rights activist and, thanks to social media, is quite the celebrity. Opened by Sunny, an American who came to Kabul following love, it plays host to a collective of dynamic and unusual characters. Charlie, the rootless daughter of American missionaries, now working as a hairdresser in Northern California. The characters are fabulous, every one comes to life off the page and you can see each one clearly in your mind. Deborah] Rodriguez captures place and people wholeheartedly, unveiling the faces of Afghanistan's women through a wealth of memorable characters who light up the page.

The Scottish Families Book Group is for anyone who is currently being supported by one of our services in Scotland.Pretty much everyone agreed that this was an easy read, which transported its readers to another world. I’d read Deborah’s first book, a debut memoir titled: “The Kabul Beauty School” so of course I’ve been anxious to read this one, her first debut work of fiction “A Cup of Friendship”. For me there were two main downfalls - I think there were too many main characters and associated story-lines vying for attention. In short, it won't challenge you but if you like your chick-lit with a social conscious then this isn't a bad effort! And lastly, the way they managed to find Yasmina’s sister towards the end of the book, without any lasting consequences or repercussions for stealing her away from people who wanted to sell her into prostitution wasn’t very credible either.
