About this deal

The briquettes are designed to burn long and slow - for up to eight hours when used correctly - giving you cosy warmth throughout. On average, this is up to four times longer than conventional logs and briquettes.

An increasing proportion of air pollution in urban areas is coming from wood-burning stoves, which have taken off in popularity in recent years, partly for aesthetic reasons and in some cases in response to the high price of fossil fuels. Winter is closer than you think – and it’s time to prepare the home for warmth and comfort. By taking some time to inspect, clean, and maintain your wood-burning stove, you ensure many cosy nights ahead. Last week, the environment secretary, Thérèse Coffey, announced more stringent standards for new wood-burning stoves but stopped short of new measures to curb existing stoves, insisting instead that people should be “educated” in how to use them rather than subjected to “fingerpointing”. Van Wagner, C.E. 1977. Conditions for the start and spread of crown fire. Canadian Journal of Forest Research 7 (1): 23–24. https://doi.org/10.1139/x77-004. data on BA with fuel loads from the Carnegie–Ames–Stanford Approach (CASA) biogeochemical model of vegetationSet your heating to come on just before you get up and switch off after you've gone to bed. If it's very cold, set your heating to come on earlier and turn off later rather than turning the thermostat up.

Over time, as you burn wood, various residues like soot, tar, and creosote accumulate on the inside walls of the chimney. Not only can these decrease the efficiency of your stove by narrowing the passage for smoke, but they can also pose serious fire hazards. The UK has 13 per cent of the world’s blanket bog, which the Government yesterday said was the equivalent of England’s ‘national rainforests’.Open fires: sweep your chimney, use a fireguard, make sure the fire is put out properly before you leave the room.

Briquettes are a type of wood fuel that is made of compressed combustible material, and can offer a less smokey, cheaper and more environmentally friendly alternative to logs and wood. Many wood-burning stoves are sold on their supposedly green credentials, as trees can be regrown, and absorb carbon from the air as they do. But environmental campaigners point out that in fact wood-burning on a large scale does not benefit the climate, as the carbon from burning is released into the atmosphere now but trees take up to a century to regrow and store the equivalent emissions. Proper ventilation ensures that the combustion gases from your stove are expelled efficiently, and fresh air is circulated around the room.

How to Get Set Up

Their NIGHT® Long-Burning Briquettes could offer a more cost-effective and time-saving solution, so you can spend more time snuggled up, and less time stoking the flames. Lotte, 51, sometimes burns foraged wood as well as briquettes in her 15-year-old stove to stay warm. “It does get cold in the winter. Our boat is a long thin tube of metal sat in water and sometimes solid ice,” she said. “We have hoodies and we live in them during the winter.” Your energy bill will include; a breakdown of costs, such as daily standing charges and the cost of energy used in the period covered by the bill, tariff information and a record of your past energy usage. Beyond direct meteorological constraints, climate change has already demonstrated indirect impacts on prescribed fire implementation. Extreme meteorological events, especially severe to historically unprecedented drought conditions, have been contributing factors to several prescribed fires that “escaped” and became disastrous wildfires. The societal and political fallout from such events has led to multiple temporary U.S.-wide moratoria on prescribed fire (such as after the 2000 Cerro Grande Fire 37 and the 2022 Hermits Peak Fire 38. Longer fire seasons also mean that fire personnel are committed to fighting fire in some regions–which in turn reduces the number of trained personnel available to implement burns in other regions where conditions are favorable. In addition, longer fire seasons are particularly challenging for federal agencies since their firefighting workforce is dominated by seasonal employees who can only work for limited durations 33, 34, 35.

The Government had hoped to avoid bringing in a ban by encouraging landowners to voluntarily cease rotational burning, but in 2019 environment minister Lord Zac Goldsmith admitted the approach had failed.

Make it a routine to clear out ashes from your stove, following the recommended safety precautions. This not only enhances safety but also promotes better combustion.
