About this deal

When assembled as a two-step step stool, this product has a weight limit of 300 pounds. This is a nice bonus so you don’t have to have multiple step stools in the bathroom for both adults and children to use. Lexi Dwyer has been writing about home-related topics like cleaning, organization, and storage for The Spruce since 2019. Thanks to her average height and the high ceilings in her New York City apartment, she currently owns five different step stools, a few of which are on this list. She spent several hours researching dozens of step stool models, evaluating them for stability, portability, value, and additional features like trays, anti-slip tread, and support railings. She also spoke to a professor of occupational therapy for additional insight on safety. This medium-duty step stool weighs 9.5 pounds and has a weight capacity of 330 pounds. When folded, it’s 2 inches wide and 35 inches tall, making it easy to store or hang on a hook in a walk-in pantry or utility closet. However, it won’t fit into standard cabinetry so keep that in mind if that’s the only place you have available for storage.

They might sound like the bad guy in a sci-fi film, but Draak happen to make some excellent DIY products as well as one of the best step ladders for the money. Their 6-step aluminium ladder is just the right thing to store in your shed for when you need to get up high. It’s incredibly lightweight and has reliably grippy steps. This big beast of a step ladder is made from fibreglass. This provides several benefits over metal ladders, as it’s incredibly weather resistant, stronger than tubular or box section aluminium, and non-conductive to electricity. Available in 4 and six-tread versions, it’s a solid series of ladders. One thing to consider is that this isn’t a folding step stool, so once this 9-pound stool is assembled it will take up more space than a folding step stool, but if you plan to leave it out near your bed then you don’t have to worry about it taking up storage space in a closet. Because of its modern look and safety features, it’s the best step stool to keep by your bed.

My Top Recommended Folding Step Ladders

This is the classic type of aluminium step ladder that would be found in any DIYer’s arsenal of useful kit. If you’re planning on doing a spot of re-decorating, then you can’t go far wrong with a step ladder that reaches up to 184 cm. Other ladders in the Draak range include 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, and 8-step versions. The height of the top step on your folding ladder or stool will determine how high you can reach – and extra steps give you flexibility while keeping you on solid ground.

The steps are treaded for solid stability and the top handlebar doubles as a knee rest so you can balance your legs against the handle when reaching for something with two hands. With a weight capacity of 225 pounds, this step stool has also been rated by the ANSI for commercial use in shops and restaurants. We’ve all tried to reach for something—whether in the kitchen, bathroom, or a closet—only to end up standing on our toes and wiggling our fingers as we reach as far up as possible. If you find yourself doing this often, a step stool will make your life a lot easier and safer. For the best overall step stool, we chose the Malawi Big 3-Step Iron Step Stool. It features a large standing platform that allows you to securely place both feet on each step, and each step is covered in slip resistant material. The feet of the step stool are also slip resistant, so you don’t have to worry about the step stool moving while you are standing on it.It’s also not foldable, so make sure you have a place to store it before purchasing. But if you’re looking for a step stool that is attractive and sturdy enough to handle daily wear and tear, this is the best wooden step stool. We have step stools in two sizes. The small one is 22 cm (9 inches) high, and the large one is 39 cm (15 inches) high. They are made of strong, durable plastic that won’t let you down, whether you’re using yours for standing or sitting. They’re a really handy thing to have around the home, and so inexpensive, it’s no wonder they’re such a popular product. After it was a top performer in our lab, we continued testing the HBTower 3-Step Ladder with Handrail for six months at home. We found it useful for so many tasks around the house, including changing light bulbs, hanging things in the closet, and putting up a canopy. Even with the handrails, we didn't find it bulky at all and it was really easy to move around. We used it daily and noted no damage or changes to the look or function of the step stool. Overhaul we appreciated its versatility, and loved the handrails for additional support. Even though this looks like a toy version of a regular step ladder, it’s ruggedly built from aluminium box section and can hold as much weight as a full-size ladder. You also get excellent non-slip steps and a wide top platform that allows you to work at a maximum height of just under 61 cm. When you’re shopping for the best step stool, safety should be your most important consideration. “Stability is a crucial factor to consider when choosing a step stool,” says Fritzi Gros-Daillon, director of Education & Advocacy for Age Safe America. “Look for a step stool with a wide base, non-slip feet, and slip-resistant treads to ensure that it remains steady and stable when in use.”

If you use a step stool in your bedroom, consider sliding it under your bed to hide it and save space. You can also store your step stool in a garage or shed if you don’t plan on using it every day. The Costco Two-Step Signature Step Stool is stable, foldable, and well-constructed but not too heavy or expensive. It is ideal for those tasks where you need some height but not as much as a regular ladder would require. It folds mostly flat, and you can do it easily with only one hand. The top handle comes up high and has a rubberized grip, so it offers a bit of support if you need to lean forward, though not as much as actual side railings. The evenly spaced steps have slip-resistant plastic treads that help with stability, although the first step is very narrow, which may be problematic for some. Meanwhile, the feet have rubberized tips that protect floors from scratches and reduce wobble. This higher step configuration comes in handy when you’re potty training a toddler who can’t reach the toilet or wash their hands on their own and they need the added height of both steps to get onto the toilet or to reach the sink. The step stool also has cushioned handles on each side, making it easy to move the stool around. At 5.5 pounds, the stool is one of the lightest on our list, and it can be easily moved from room to room. If you need to go higher, it's also available in a three-step version. One downside: The weight limit caps out at 225 pounds, so some buyers may need something with a higher capacity. Not every step stool is aesthetically pleasing, but thankfully there are a few ways you can hide it. “A step stool that is easy to store is also an important consideration,” says Gros-Daillon, director of Education & Advocacy for Age Safe America. “Look for a folding step stool that can be easily stored in a closet or hung on a hook when not in use, taking up minimal space in your home.”This rating means that it’s safe to use for short periods of time, like when grabbing a sweater from the top shelf of your closet. However, we don’t recommend standing on it for an extended period of time, such as while painting a wall or installing wallpaper. As far as safety features, it's the polka dot design on the top that helps with traction so you’ll feel secure when you’re standing on it. It’s 35 inches tall when folded and won’t fit inside standard cabinetry. Plan to store it in a pantry or utility closet.
