About this deal

Like Canon’s other DSLRs, the EOS-1D Mark IV has a collection of Picture Styles (Standard, Portrait, Landscape, Neutral, Faithful and Monochrome) that may be used to adjust the appearance of JPEG images. As usual, the Standard option is a good starting point and it produces vibrant but natural-looking images. Canon has increased the level of sharpening and saturation that is applied in-camera to make images more ‘press ready’, so that a sharpness of 3 on the EOS-1D Mark IV is equivalent to a setting of 5 on the EOS-1D Mark III.

ISO 100-12,800 in 1/3EV or 1EV steps, expandable to include L1 (ISO 50), H1 (ISO 25,600), H2 (ISO 52,600) and H3 (ISO 102,400) Auto and Incandescent settings both struggle with household incandescent lighting, though Manual and 2,600 Kelvin white balance settings produce much more neutral i We don't have any quantitative way of evaluating dust-removal systems, but based on Canon's description of it, their anti-dust technology does appear to go a step or two beyond anything else currently on the market, providing a more comprehensive solution to the problem of dust in DSLR images than we've seen to date. At 7.2µm square, the pixel pitch of the EOS-1D Mark III's [CMOS] sensor is identical to the EOS-1Ds Mark II.

Continuous shooting

If a camera or lens is significantly miscalibrated, it should be sent in for servicing, but for the rest, I suggest running the lenses through the easy focus calibration procedure. Lenses – The lens has dust inside that may affect images. The rubber zoom/focus ring is coming away from the barrel of the lens. There are three raw file sizes available on the EOS-1D Mark IV: four-million-pixel (2448×1632-pixel) S-raw, a nine-million-pixel (3672×2448-pixel) M-raw (Medium-raw) option and the standard 16-million-pixel raw size (4896×3264 pixels). There are also four JPEG image sizes and ten compression ratios. More info from Rob Galbraith: Practicing sports shooter and digital workflow consultant extraordinaire Rob Galbraith has published a detailed hands on with the Canon Mark III, including a detailed look at image quality vs the Mark II N, some observations on its AF system, and a report on his real-world experiences with the Mark III and Canon's new WFT-E2 wireless remote system. At 1920×1080 pixels (Full HD), video may be recorded at 30p, 25p or 24p fps, while 60p or 50p fps recording is possible at HD (1280×720 pixels) and SD (640×480 pixels) resolution.

Identical exposures were manually set - The aperture was f/5.6 and the ISO 400 shutter speed setting was 1/60. The Mark III is Canon's first professional Digital SLR to include a Live View feature, usually reserved for point-and-shoot cameras. The image is displayed on an electronic screen instead of in the viewfinder alone.

Controls

Like all other Canon EOS-1 series cameras, the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV accepts the full range of EF lenses available for full-frame cameras. Because its APS-H sensor is larger than those of Canon's consumer and enthusiast SLRs, it can't use the EF-S lenses Canon manufactures for use on APS-C cameras. The same applies to lenses with sub-35mm image circles available from third-party manufacturers as well. As I write this, the demand for this camera is huge - you basically need to get on a list to get one even after over 3 months of its initial release (unless you are willing to pay a huge premium). The new display will make it easier to sell pictures right from the camera - or share the results with a client.
