About this deal

Renata herself has the power to remove memories from others’ heads and make them totally forget the memory. Renata Convida has the power to steal someone's memories with her touch, making her one of the few people in the world with this power.

There are several major elements to Incendiary, the wonderful book Chris Cleave wrote well before he became known for Little Bee. I also agree with Catherine (above), “The Other Hand” should be required reading, particularly as a foil to inflammatory journalism.Hi Aelish – great that you mention Roddy Doyle – I’m a huge admirer of his books for adults, and recently I discovered that he has a lot of clever, funny kids’ books that my children really love. The foundation of her character does not want to give back (to anyone) the hate which has been measured on her life. Books that Ride on the Coat Tails of Actual Tragedies so as to Beef Up Their Lousy Rendition of Same.

I was looking for a book to read whilst commuting from Kent to Canary Wharf and a collegue of mine gave me “Incendairy” I was captured from the first page and could not put it down. Because this is not just one of the best fantasy novels I’ve read over of the last couple of months, but of 2020 too.His fast and loose handling of the big issues of our time is eye-catching, occasionally tasteless and highly readable throughout.

I couldn’t stop reading and if I had not “life” to get on with (and my own 4 year old son to look after) I would have finished it within the day. They’ say Osama is dead and this current aggression and hopelessness is from a young indigenous people with nothing to lose – one is fiction and one is reality – or is ti? The narrator’s feeling for husband and son are simply props in a series of scenes written for a bad actress. The most confusing aspect of the book remains Cleave's incessant harping on class-conflict -- a surprisingly old-fashioned focus (at least in its artless presentation here). She may be tidy, but, when she gets nervous, she also likes to seek comfort in the arms of other men (not entirely convincingly -- one would figure she'd start sleeping around a hell of a lot more after losing her husband). Some of the side characters, like Leo and Nuria both sounded really interesting but we barely get to know anything about them. Certainly, this bombshell could not be as easily suppressed as he does in the novel (and the betrayal that goes along with it is also pretty pathetic). It’s for this reason that the point of view is, and has to be, determinedly hers, a perspective characterised by her position as perpetual outsider. It was easy to summon her in my imagination, visualize her flat, see her walking the streets shell shocked, drunk or simply lost. Worse is how forced the Osama-premise is, the person she is supposedly addressing essentially forgotten over large stretches of the novel.
