Imhotep: The Duel is quite fun, in my opinion, and Lanterns Dice is every bit a worthy adaptation of the classic game. The original doesn’t offer any rule-breaking bailouts and is better for it because you are forced to strategize a bit more. At the end of the turn, the player who did not roll the dice during the prior turn collects the dice and rolls them. At least in the original you could see which tiles with crowns were coming out for the next turn and try to position yourself to grab one.

I just don’t see a need to have both in my collection and as a fan of the original, Kingdomino easily won this battle. Each domain is worth the number of coat of arms it contains multiplied by the number of crosses present in that domain. Calculate your score by doing a similar thing to Kingdomino — essentially, count each contiguous group of tiles (a “territory”), and then multiply its size by the number of crosses it has to get its value.

The special abilities exist to give you a way to break the rules and to slightly mitigate the luck inherent in dice rolling. We’re happy to report that this core element of placing dominoes in personal kingdoms is alive and well in Kingdomino Duel.

If you’re steadily working toward a power, the other player can still snatch it from you if the dice come out in their favor for a couple of turns.Trying to catch up to your opponent when they’re two or so spaces ahead of you on the track (without an ability) is generally a losing bargain, in my experience. Players also use another sheet and place it in the center of the table with the reverse side up to track special spells to be gained.
