She then turned to writing - and made her breakthrough with the phenomenally successful TV series Widows. I won this book in a giveaway not really knowing that it was number seven in a series, but, here we are!

The story was definitely slow, and the writing was a bit awkward here and there (perhaps a testament to the author’s original writing experience coming from screenplay work rather than novel-writing). He also becomes a lot more serious, especially once he gets personally involved in the case, and there are some deep and emotional moments that occur around him as the novel progresses. Serving as a prequel to the acclaimed Prime Suspect television series, the Jane Tennison novels follow a younger version of the show’s protagonist, the titular Jane Tennison, as she works her way up the ranks of the Metropolitan Police. The author’s great use of multiple character perspectives in this novel was perfect to highlight these various side characters, and I liked how it also helped to make some of the people connected to the case seem more suspicious or guilty. He wore black-and-white ‘corpse paint’ make-up so that his face resembled a skull, and at Mayhem’s concerts, he would self-harm. This story has some unrelentingly harsh criticisms of the Catholic church, for those who may be sensitive to that. However, being a goodie means fighting more baddies, so that’s a lot of experience, items to loot, and more to come.

It was really quite intriguing to see an anti-Church police officer in the 1980s, and I really liked the complex and compelling portrayal around him. The ITV crime drama's 22nd season continues with episode 6, The Witches of Angel's Rise, with the lead detective duo once again tasked with solving a grisly murder in their quaint yet deadly English village. This book is part of a series (7th of the detective Tennison) but can also be read as a standalone if you prefer.I had an outstanding time reading this latest book and I look forward to the next instalment of this fun series in 2022. When they have a possible identity with the assistance from a former nun who lived at the orphanage, the plot thickens.
