About this deal

I also enjoy some contemporary fiction, literary fiction and romance with a smattering of non-fiction. This novel is a bit like driving up a mountain in which it gradually builds momentum then about mid-way through it reaches a heart-thumping pace and you begin to notice the many twists and turns.

The Only A Perfectly Executed Thriller: Read Our Review of The Only

The steps taken towards the close of The Only Suspect was masterful, I couldn’t predict where Louise Candlish was going with her latest release! It is written in two different time periods – 1995 and the present, and told in the names of different characters, which gives different sides of the story, at the same time not telling the whole story immediately, which builds the suspense and adds to the surprise of the final chapters, which are far from straightforward. A holistic understanding of steroids necessitated a deep dive into the intricate ethical and legal dimensions. and for me personally the story itself just wasn’t interesting or twisty enough to warrant such a long drawn out book. Louise Candlish has written a good novel but I do think it could have been a great novel with a few minor tweaks.Although the evidence against Omar Evans, the school’s Black athletics trainer, was flimsy, he is currently serving a long prison sentence. Louise Candlish’s writing and plotting was detailed and intelligent, that kept me on my toes and second guessing myself. OUR HOUSE is the one you may be most familiar with as it’s on our screens as a major four-part ITV drama starring Martin Compston, Tuppence Middleton and Rupert Penry-Jones. The story is slow to begin with, but the pace picks up mid-way as the author weaves information that links the timelines with enough twists and turns along the way to keep me reading.

Amazing he’d got away with it, when you thought about it, for he must have been obviously agitated when he rejoined her, but she was giggly, boozed up, all over him. Thanks to NetGalley, the author and publisher for an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review. Eventually, she revealed that she was married to a controlling man, Drew Stanley, and their luxury home in Silver Vale was virtually her prison.I couldn’t have asked for more, really, and feel so proud that readers are continuing to discover it and recommend it far and wide. The Only Suspect is a perfectly executed thriller, an unpredictable ride that will enthral both fans and new readers alike. With a great sense of time and place, and an edgy feel right the way through, this is a terrific read!

The Only Suspect by Louise Candlish Book Review The Only Suspect by Louise Candlish Book Review

In this novel, the characters make one choice after another, each propelled by their own life experiences and desires, that have a significant impact on those close to them. Alex has his own problems, a lodger he doesn’t want in his house that is causing tension between him and his wife, and paranoia about the opening of the new nature trail. They’re complete opposites so it’s Rollo who becomes suspicious of Marina who seems too good to be true and puts a lot of boundaries around her relationship with Rick. The Only Suspect is a slow burn - a very slow burn, well, more of a simmer, really - that doesn't really get interesting until over half way through. De ontwikkeling van de verschillende personages is wel enorm interessant en ik voelde continu een bepaalde spanning. This story seemed like it was going to be slow paced but there were so many things that were not as it seemed. Christ, how he’d preferred life before you were subjected to these streams of other people’s consciousness; he had enough on his plate wrangling his own.

The Only Suspect Marianne (Wollongong, 02, Australia)’s review of The Only Suspect

After meeting her one summer’s afternoon whilst she temped in the same building as him, he knew he’d never be the same again. Bodie has her own views about the real culprit, but she becomes increasingly unsure – as does the reader – about her own judgment. Flashbacks to the 90s add to the layers of this story and really make you feel like any one of us could have gotten intertwined with these unexpected events. The Only Suspect is a suspenseful, thrilling and breath-taking mystery about the dark secrets that live in the past, and the paralysing fear that they'll be uncovered. I do think this was a better 3-star than Our House, but the slow pace and the unnecessary Zara drama held the book back from being a 4-star.
