Homme doesn't imprint his own views on the Monkeys but encourages them to follow their strange instincts, whether it's a Nick Cave obsession or the inclination to emphasize atmosphere over energy. It hints at a darker, fuller sound previously not heard from the band and constitutes a vital stepping stone in their career. Some songs suffering more than others (Potion Approaching and The Jeweler's Hands), but nothing majorly disappointing most of the time,, just unimpressive.

The guitars in particular have a snapping, reverberant desert/surf tone that fuels the band's descent into night.

Decent pressing, mediocre mastering with at least one thing to compliment, as it has a really nice separation (Cornerstone sounds lovely). Released in 2009, the album features the singles 'Crying Lightning', 'Cornerstone' and 'My Propeller', and represents a departure from the punk-influenced sound of the band's first two albums.
