The experimental treatment Evo-Devo evolves a developmental program rather than a static phenotype (Fig. 1). For each parameter in an Evo robot, an Evo-Devo robot has two: its starting and final value. The evolutionary algorithm associated with the Evo-Devo treatment thus optimizes 48 morphological and 96 control parameters. The morphology and controller of the k-th voxel change linearly from starting to final values, throughout the lifetime of a developing robot.
