Fantastic Racism: Lightning initially states his dislike of rusty cars. He gets creeped out at being up close with them, and is trying to get out of his Rusteze Medicated Bumper Ointment sponsorship due to not wanting to be associated with them, even stating they're bad for his image. When he points this out to Mater, Mater asked him what's wrong with rusty, old cars. To avoid hurting his feelings, Lightning says that he meant other old cars, not like Mater. He overcomes this prejudice after developing a friendship with Mater and happily stays on with Rusteze at the end. Shown Their Work: Watch the DVD extras to see the amount of work that went into even minor details that virtually nobody will notice. This is especially noticed in the second film. Especially when many of the Mooks turn out to be Lemons and Mater's spiel about car parts. Lightning McQueen's number was originally going to be 57, as a reference to the year John Lasseter was born, but was later changed to 95, as a reference to the year Toy Story came out. This State Farm commercial features toy cars, airplanes, and trains as the world's equivalent of pets.

This inspired Vídeo Brinquedo to make The Little Cars in the Great Race, a rip-off of this film, followed by more straight-to-DVD ripoffs like A Car's Life: Sparky's Big Adventure by Spark Plug Entertainment, The Autobots from China, CarGo by The Asylum, and Wheely: Fast and Hilarious by KRU Studios. In the Finnish version, The King was voiced by Finnish two-time Formula One World Champion Mika Häkkinen. His scream when he wakes up after getting lost is used again when he is about to crash into a Cozy Cone, a third time when the Stanley statue lands in front of him, and a fourth time when he sees Frank. The King is painted Dinoco Blue, with the Dinoco sponsor and the number "43". On his trunk, he has a giant, tall blue spoiler. Was successfully helped out by McQueen so he can let him end his career on a race finish, not wanting to let him suffer the same fate as Doc Hudson and also because he learned that friendship is important

Sweet and Sour Grapes: In the end after giving up the Piston Cup to save The King, Lightning is offered the Dinoco sponsorship by Tex, which was his dream since the beginning. However, he turns down the offer, because the Rust-Eze team gave him his big break and knows there's a lot more to racing than just winning. Credits Montage: After the "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue, the credits continue over a series of slow-motion stills throughout the movie. Odd Couple: Lighting and Mater (worldly/naive), Sarge and Fillmore (army/hippie), Ramone and Flo ("gangster"/showgirl) Fly-at-the-Camera Ending: The Dinoco helicopter flies past the screen before the end credits start. During the end credits, car-stylised versions of Toy Story, A Bug's Life, and Monsters, Inc. are seen playing at the Radiator Springs Drive-In Theatre.Artistic License – Sports: The racing here is most loosely based on NASCAR, and artistic license abounds. Hey, McQueen, you alright? Listen, don't you worry, pal, you had a good run. Enjoy your retirement!" Richard Petty as Strip " The King". The car's design was based on Richard Petty's 1970 Plymouth Superbird. When Lightning rides on the wall to pass Rusty Cornfuel and Floyd Mulvihill, he passes Windford Bradford Rutherford, Sage VanDerSpin, and goes to Slider Petrolski. However if you notice, past him are Todd Marcus, Ernie Gearson, and Windford again, as if there were 2 RPM race cars with the same body, but there is not.

His "Wow!" when he sees the Wheel Well is used again when he approaches Doc after witnessing his real driving. In the Hebrew dub of the film, Lightning McQueen's name is changed to Speedy McQueen. In the opening act when McQueen makes the joke about "Thunder comes after Lightning", it is changed to "Gonzales comes after Speedy", referencing the Looney Tunes character Speedy Gonzales. Doc: Uh-huh...didn't think so. These are good folk around here, who care about one another. I don't want 'em depending on someone they can't count on. The tires of Lightning McQueen and other race cars are Lightyear tires, which alludes both to the tire manufacturer Goodyear and to Buzz Lightyear. Breaking the Fourth Wall: During the end credits, Mater lip synchs to the lyrics of "Route 66" directly to the audience. Then there's Lightning staring at the camera when Mater tries to remove his parking boot and the bug bumping into it at a post-credits scene.

Gifts, Toys & Accessories

Lightning McQueen's initial frustrations with being in Radiator Springs, and then gradually warming up to the town as he learns about it later on, is strongly reminiscent of Dr. Joel Fleishman and his experiences in Cicely, Alaska, from the TV series Northern Exposure. The Brave Little Toaster (1987) • Valiant (2005) • The Wild (2006) • A Christmas Carol (2009) • Gnomeo & Juliet (2011) • Mars Needs Moms (2011) • Strange Magic (2015) • The Lion King (2019)

McQueen found another way to embarrass himself at a demolition derby. Makes me feel sorry for the guy. Not really! Luigi tells Lightning that Guido has dreamed of getting to do a real pitstop for a racecar early on. At the tiebreaker race, Guido gets his chance and speed-changes all four of Lightning's tires in five seconds. Fooled by the Sound: When Sheriff's engine sputters, Lightning believes that Sheriff is shooting at him. And some obscure politician guy from California. (Though this being during his tenure as governor, he's actually voiced by Jess Harnell.)

In the Finnish version, he was voiced by Finnish two-time Formula One World Champion Mika Häkkinen. The original script (called The Yellow Car, about an electric car living in a gas-guzzling world), some of the original drawings and characters were produced in 1998 and the producers agreed that Cars could be the next movie after A Bug's Life and would be released in early 1999, particularly around June 4. However, the movie was eventually scrapped in favor of Toy Story 2. Later, production resumed with major script changes, like giving Mater, Doc, and a few other characters a bigger part. The King (who has now been repaired) and Lynda later visit Radiator Springs and tour the museum. As Mater showed them the Doc Hudson wing, The King remarks that the Hudson Hornet was his inspiration. Later, he and Lynda were shown watching a movie at the Radiator Springs Drive-In Theatre. He also gloats on his Piston Cup victory and presents his trophy next to him, even breaking the fourth wall to viewers about how he won it. Because of this, his selfishness once again becomes his downfall when McQueen finally beats him in a virtual race at the canonical Disney World attraction, Lightning McQueen's Racing Academy.
