About this deal

This is a stunning book and a great reminder of quiet calm, humanity and how good life can be when it is free from racism and hate. To prevent the Opekta workers from becoming suspicious, Gies tried not to enter the hiding place during office hours. Her books have been adapted for stage and screen and have been translated into twenty-three languages. Neither one came back to live with us, so by the time the war ended I lived with just Mother, Father, and Grandmother.

Foxed Foxing is the age related browning, or brown-yellowish spots, that can occur to book paper over time. He was involved in the Dutch resistance, drawing on his connections to acquire ration cards and illegal papers. But when I bade farewell to my mother, father, and sister in Austria, I did so with a clarity about my identity. Gold has received the Best of the Best Award given by the American Library Association, the Anti-Defamation League's Merit of Educational Distinction Award and a Christopher Award for affirming the highest values of the human spirit, among other awards and prizes.Martin Gilbert, the foremost British historian of the Holocaust, here presents the evidence collected over many years. Gies and the other helpers could have been executed if they had been caught hiding Jews; however, she was not arrested because the police officer who came to interrogate her was from Vienna, her birth town. After the war had ended and it was confirmed that Anne Frank had perished in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, Gies gave the collection of papers and notebooks to the sole survivor from the Secret Annex, Otto Frank.

When you've read her book, you'll realise that this unassuming, principled, wise and humane woman was precisely that - a real hero. The woman took off all my layers of clothes, removed the bow from my hair, and put me between the covers in the center of the other bed. The question of how the Nazis found the hiding place and who, if anyone, betrayed the people in hiding is the subject of much debate. For the millions moved by Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, here at last is Miep Geis’s own astonishing story. The young diarist and her fellow fugitives looked to Miep for not only food and protection but also news of the outside world — and anything to break the terrified monotony. She protected them from knowledge of the worst of what was happening outside and the dangers which they were all facing while giving them all staunch emotional support. On the morning of Friday, August 4, 1944, a man brandishing a revolver entered Gies’ office and told the helpers to stay put. Like thousands of unsung heroes of the Holocaust, they risked their lives each day to bring food, news, and emotional support to the victims.

After transcribing sections for his family, Frank was persuaded of the value of Anne’s account of their ordeal and arranged for the book's publication in 1947. I thought it would be a minor follow-up on Anne Franks diary, but it is a remarkable story, told with no sentiment or hint of personal bravery, about what it was like to be helping Jews in hiding while the Nazis were trying to completely wipe them out. Everyone believed that the quickest way for a child to learn the Dutch language was to go to a Dutch school. Miep Gies had assured Anne Frank's biographer Melissa Müller repeatedly that she did not think the main suspect, Willem van Maaren, was the culprit in the betrayal. All the time, Miep, Jan and others were attempting to avoid arousing suspicion as they hid their friends and conducted other covert work, the full extent of which may never be known. My long, fine dark blond hair was held back with a large piece of cotton cloth tied into a big puffed bow. For those who have read the Diary of Anne Frank, this tells another side of that experience, the side of the people keeping them safe. It was all a case of time, and her disappointment is enormous when she discovers that the discovery of the secret annex came too soon - just two months later and it is likely all would have survived.
