It is neither a dystopian narrative nor a one-sided "the cities are back" story, but a balanced picture rooted in the nitty-gritty reality of these cities. I would recommend this book for young adults who want to read about cultural misunderstandings, outsiders, and nationalism/tribalism. A gripping tale about two boys who must find their own answers - and their own way forward - in a world divided by differences.Book talk and signing with Alan Mallach with The Divided City: Poverty and Prosperity in Urban America at Novel Memphis.

It would be a three for story and writing, but I think the aim of this book was to put across a message to a demographic which I am not part of, and that it does very well so I bump it up to a four. He digs deep and not only highlights past failures, but future opportunities to help breathe life back into these places. The instructions for learning, for students to refer to directly, have an appropriate tone and clarity which is refreshing to see.A powerful, gripping story about friendship, prejudice and tolerance from multi-award-winning author Theresa Breslin. Now adapted for the stage by Martin Travers, the play has already been produced to great acclaim at Glasgow's Citizens Theatre. A longtime librarian, Breslin was awarded lifelong honorary membership in the Scottish Library Association for distinguished services to children's literature and librarianship. Most suited for preteens, as a teacher I can see this being used as a wonderful teaching aid to discuss the need for kindness and compassion throughout all of lives interactions.

The incidental illustration of the usual parental restrictions on adolescent comings and goings do not expand the scope. This book is excellent for dealing with sectarianism issues as it addresses the difficulties faced by young people. However, Breslin’s voice is uncompromising and fierce, and readers won’t find it easy to close the book without taking it to heart. So begins a compulsive contemporary novel, exploring traditional tensions between Protestants and Catholic football supporters plus the plight of asylum seekers adrift in the city. He and Joe argue, and Joe decides that if his friend marches, he'll go with Jammy and throw things at the Protestants. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. At least, I guess there may be a way to connect to the football aspect of it - even if the footie talk is mostly limited to the two Glaswegian teams in the early 2000s.

But often, especially in areas like this, they’d be lying ajar because people didn’t bother, or the door catch was broken. This entry was posted in Book Reviews, Mixing the Colours, Placements and Volunteers Blog, Reading Ideas. And then he explores what he thinks it will take to really create resilience for all their citizens. The Divided City is a scintillating review of an urban renaissance throughout some fascinating and diverse cities in America. After all, if solving the last mile problem through transit involves taking Uber to the bus, and then another Uber from the bus to the workplace, why not just take one Uber to begin with? Graham dug deep into the bag to find the last chips, the little crispy ones soaked in vinegar that always nestled in the folds of paper at the bottom. How does this work link with the range of protected characteristics that are defined by the Equality Act (2010)? The kind of street where your footsteps echoed loud, too loud – because there was no one else about. Together the two boys try to help Kyoul, and learn a lot about themselves, their families, and the shared history of sectarian Glasgow.
