The final Bacardi 8 Year Old Rum product has a deep golden colour, a complex yet well rounded aroma of prunes, apricots, vanilla and nutmeg over a clean oak base and a long expansive finish with a rounded palate. Following its success they launched a standard 8 year old in 1996 without the finish or fancy bottling – that’s the bottle I have. Each batch is made from a special selection of barrel aged reserve rums which are aged for a minimum of 8 years. Bacardi 8 rum was the “sole preserve of the Bacardi family for over one hundred and thirty years” it is a “unique blend of the finest Bacardi Rums matured for no less than eight years”.

Tasting, meanwhile, reveals notes of robust butterscotch, caramelised banana, and maple syrup, whilst the finish is long, smooth, and slightly spicy with hints of nutmeg, ginger, and woodfire smoke. I knew before I got into Newcastle Airports duty free that the rum selection would be fairly limited, I expected to pick up some Bacardi, Captain Morgan, Lambs maybe even a Woods or a Pussers.Each bottle encapsulates the spirit of the Caribbean, inviting enthusiasts to indulge in a sensory journey that celebrates tradition and the vibrant essence of Bacardi Rum. Prolonged ageing allows a concentration of flavours via evaporation and extended contact with charred wood, causing tannins to diffuse into the rum. There’s a reason for that – after the Bacardi family fled Cuba they have moved their operations in other countries such as Puerto Rico and Mexico (where they were already operating for a while) because of the better tariffs in trading with the US. The tube and bottle have that sort of retro look that Bacardi go for and is consistent with the usual Bacardi branding.

Bacardi 8 Year Old Rum is aged to perfection, beautifully capturing rare flavours from the Bacardi family’s treasured recipe. Bacardi Reserva Superior 8 Year Old Rum 70cl is a premium, golden, sipping rum, made from a blend of Bacardi Rums aged between 8 and 16 years. Please always read the labels, warnings, and directions provided with the product before using or consuming a product.Even continuous bottlings are subject to change as time passes by and I’m going to test that theory with these two bottles of Bacardi. It is not quite as “Latin” in terms of oakiness and in particularly smokiness as the Bacardi Reserva.
On the palate, the rum is sweet and rich, with a delicious combination of tropical fruits, peels, and winter spices. This blend is based on the original family reserve, which was created by our founder Don Facundo Bacardí and kept for the family only until only a few years ago.To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Until a few years ago reserved for the Bacardi family, it embodies all the values that true connoisseurs appreciate: first-class quality, great tradition and passion. Known as "The Family Reserve", this BACARDÍ rum was inspired by a recipe from 1862 and was originally kept for family special occasions, but is now available for the world to enjoy.
