About this deal

There were some delightfully funny moments scattered throughout the gloom and absurd bad luck Jane has to deal with but unfortunately I found Jane to fall flat as a narrator and couldn't fully get into the story - some of the characters were brilliantly written but not all and this made me drag at certain parts. By completing your purchase, you agree to Audible's Conditions of Use and authorise Audible to charge your designated card or any other card on file. Then I read her latest memoir and found out she quite liked Trump when she was on The Celebrity Apprentice, but it was too late. I would still perhaps proceed with caution if you’re planning to read this and feeling overly sensitive to fertility chat. Funny (of course), with heavy subjects written in a light, somewhat anxious, tone Suttie’s debut hit all the right marks.

sorry if I’ve missed the point I just couldn’t connect with Jane but I did love some of the other characters like Monica the unprofessional therapist who is slightly deluded. Loved the depiction of OCD, always in the background like a thread running through the story, but not a total defining personality trait. I wish more time was spent on developing the characters so that they didn't feel like one-dimensional, aggravating stereotypes. I did however find the stuff on OCD agonisingly relatable and I feel that Isy Suttie accurately portrayed (as far as is possible in a work of fiction like this) what it’s like to live like that. It's an easy read, with the first half definitely stronger than the second, but it lacks substance and a clear sense of self.I SO rooted for Jane, and I really appreciated the character development given to the characters that you'd least expect.

Everyone assumes they know best but all their interventions buffet her away from the happiness she’d get from being in control. The story didn't intrigue and the themes such as mental health etc were dealt with at a superficial level. I also wanted to jump into the book and scream at how people were treating Jane and how she felt like she had to put up with other people inserting themselves into her life… maybe that’s a sign of a good book? Her mental health issues make her more resilient, not more fragile and she’s charming and funny as well as troubled, easy to root for as each event takes her further and further off course. It came across as a weak attempt at trying to explain some of the reasons behind Jane's mental health concerns.I listened to the audiobook -- with Isy Suttie doing the narration -- and her voice just fits perfectly with the humour.

There is a scene in One Day where Em is at a restaurant with her boyfriend, and moans that every menu item is the setup to a joke of his, and that even though he is a comedian, he isn't actually that funny.Beyond the battering her confidence took from the split, it’s clear Jane has other issues: she’s OCD and suffers anxious, intrusive thoughts. There were also swathes of text where I wasn't sure what was going on, the opening pages for example. Also shout out to the birthing scene, one of the few pieces of writing that's come close to making me actually laugh out loud.

With an increasing load on her plate, friends and family who think if she only listens to them she’ll have a perfect life, and a brain which questions every decision she’s ever made, can Jane conquer her demons and step forward on her own? The mystery behind room 3 was not satisfying and there were quite a few contradictions in her behaviour that didn’t seem realistic. You could guess what would happen early on and when it did, I found I didn’t really care because the lead was a bit meh and whilst it was clearly based on real life incidences it was maybe a bit too real, and just felt in places like it was based on mundane in-jokes /references. My dad died 10 years ago in hospital and even that didn’t make me dislike them because he received amazing care.
