About this deal
Tim Walker, the Sunday Telegraph critic, gave it five stars, drawing parallels with the plot to that of King Lear. That, in a nutshell, is Enron (the play): the basics of the scandal, what led up to it and the major players involved. I didn't realize The Smartest Guys in the Room: The Amazing Rise and Scandalous Fall of Enron came out in 2003! The play itself is absolutely HUGE in scope, thus more like a musical than your ordinary theater play. I mean, I know that they were an energy and commodities trading company but I'm still not really sure what they did.
The Guardian 's critic Michael Billington speculated that it was The New York Times ' "hostile" review that contributed to its premature closure. And, if nothing else, it's a valuable piece of theatre for revealing the inner machinations of an industry that the average Joe knows little about. The play was honestly amazing, some of the language used really emphasises the illicit actions of the company and really kept me intrigued, even if I knew nothing about business, I perfectly understood the pivotal role each person played in the downfall of Enron. It transferred to the Noel Coward Theatre in January 2010 and will run there until 14 August before embarking on a UK tour.
Enron is a magnificently imaginative play combining documentarian realism with expressionistic flourishes. The play concerns the financial scandal and collapse of " ENRON", the American energy corporation, based in Texas. Enron won the 2009 Theatrical Management Association award for Best New Play and was also nominated for Best Performance in a Play (Samuel West). Mixing classical tragedy with savage comedy, Enron is published in Methuen Drama's Modern Classics series, featuring a new introduction by Natasha Tripney.
