We think of Norwich FarmShare as our sister enterprise as, like Hodmedod, they grew out of the Norwich Resilient Food Project, a community-led effort to create a more diverse, resilient food system for Norwich. As far as sea vegetables are concerned, this area has the best resources in southern Europe, with luxuriant underwater gardens and many different shapes and colours. It is a region with an abundance and wide diversity of marine species and has a deeply-rooted seafaring tradition. When I later read more reviews, I noticed one person had found several bits of shell or pebble in the flakes, which is also mentioned on the packet as possible, so I check for this by spreading flakes on a white plate first. Really stronf sea flavour which I love because I was always a fan of sea food and this now does the treat plus it comes full of micronutrients.

Most of the company’s algae are harvested on the southern coast of Galicia, in the area classified by the European Union as part of the Natura 2000 network, very close to the Atlantic Islands Natural Reserve. The algae are collected by hand on the rocks and usually in the water, selecting and cutting the adult plants at their optimum point of development, just before they wither. These whole fermented barley grains are packed with deep flavour and make a delicious addition to bread, risotto, stews, salads and more.
