About this deal

Description An action-packed series-starter perfect for fans of The Heroine Complex and Not Your Sidekick. I can appreciate how Daniels characterizes Danny not just as trans but a lesbian, and that her feelings for Sarah are a complicated mixture of admiration, awe, and attraction—but I’m also glad that Daniels resists the urge to make this anywhere near a straightforward romance. There are times when I groaned a little at the way Danny and Sarah handled their independent little investigation. If there's one good thing to come out of being conscripted into the football team, it's that I was carrying a water bottle today.

Massie on the growing European tension in decades before World War I, especially the naval arms race between Britain and Germany. I’m only about 30% of the way through it but the author handled the first book’s characters so well that I trust it won’t go downhill. If Danny can't sort through the confusion of coming out, master her powers, and stop Utopia in time, humanity faces extinction.

But when the supervillain that killed her predecessor shows her intentions to bring destruction on humanity, Danny has to make decisions she thought she'd have more time to work out. The disagreements that Danny and Sarah have regarding the best ways to proceed are nice philosophical diversions, too. Calamity gets more development, but she is primarily a vigilante, angry at the world because of unfairness. The first little bits of hair are pushing their way up from my face, and my voice dropped so early it's almost a lost cause. She was flying in a cloud layer when a nearby jet sucks a goose into its engine causing it to explode.

In a world where the skies are filled with superheroes and supervillains, 15-year-old Danny's dreams come true when the famous Dreadnought perishes in her arms and passes his powers on to her - powers that include super-strength, flight, and an outer body that matches the girl Danny's always been inside. When I turn eighteen, if I haven't killed myself yet, I'm going to move out of the house and go on hormones.

I was extremely excited about Dreadnought as North American literature desperately needs more diversity and trans superhero narratives are quite rare.

If Danny cant sort through the confusion of coming out, master her powers, and stop Utopia in time, humanity faces extinction. The fact that even though she's a literal superhero, her father still manages to make her feel small and stupid is horrifyingly realistic imo. If you’re thinking about reading this book but are holding off only because you want to know if it contains a nail-biting, race-against-the-clock, down-to-the-wire finale … then yes, yes it does. It’s not often that trans people get to take center stage in literature, and it’s wonderful to see such a positive, optimistic trans girl get to be a superhero.

There is heavy, aggressive transphobic language throughout (as well as homophobic language, to a lesser degree) and it may be beyond what some people are comfortable reading. Transgender issues aside, this is a household that is not a safe or nurturing environment for any kid. These changes in my body — I don't like them, and I'm constantly getting surprised at all the different ways I don't like them, but the one thing I thought I could count on hating doesn't really bother me.

There's a hole in his chest about the size of a golf ball, his suit charred and melted at the edges. On top of her hunt for Utopia, she juggles the new friction with her friend David who believes she’s his chance for a date, her abusive father’s mounting pressure to “fix” her body, and the reaction from Legion Pacifica when they learn the new Dreadnought is a trans girl. There are painful moments, thrilling moments, emotional moments and hilarious moments, and they’re all balanced and flow incredibly well.
