Interpretations depended upon the psychic ability of the diviner, much as in tasseography (divination by tea leaves). A counterclockwise candle wax flow means that something is moving away from you or the object of your spell. The direction of the flow will tell you if your spell was successful or if you need to recast your spell. How your ritual or vigil candle burns will give you insight into how successful your spell has been.
