In the beginning of this book, you have Kate reaching out to Tully to make amends for whatever caused a 2 year rift in their 3 decade old friendship. Tully tries to fulfill her deathbed promise to Kate---to be there for Kate's children---but Tully knows nothing about family or motherhood or taking care of people. and 60s Social Issues: We have the incestuous rape of Dorothy by her own father when she was a teenager. It wasn’t Marah’s fault Tully did what she did, but it did prompt Tully to take that drive that night.

Harriet Bloom – a prominent psychiatrist who appeared on Tully’s show many times; she is contacted by Dr. What we get instead is an intensely interior look at the friends’ psyches and relationships, and it’s utterly enthralling. But since I did read Firefly Lane, it felt like Kristin Hannah was trying to force Kate’s wonderfulness down my throat.

It wasn’t my favorite book in the world, but I was invested enough that I got the sequel, Fly Away, out of the library and read it in May. Desmond Grant – the middle-aged ER doctor who is treating Tully after her first panic attack; while he and Tully don’t seem to think much of each other upon their first encounter, they are drawn back together on more than one occasion (such as when Tully needs a ride home from the police station) and eventually become close friends. Although powerful, Cloud’s largely peripheral story deflects focus away from the main conflict, as if Hannah was loath to tackle the intractable thicket in which she mired her main characters. In particular, the book follows the three women—Tully, Marah, and Cloud—and traces their journey past and present. It was a compelling read and this second book lets us in on the story behind Tully’s mom’s life and why she was an absent parent. Yeah, it was just one bad thing after another, but thankfully Hannah's writing style is very readable and addicting in a sense. I think it’s best to read the first book in the series before it but this novel can definitely stand on it own as a highly engaging read.
