About this deal

The very simple answer is that, as you will all know, the Roman Empire spread across the whole of western Europe to the fringes of Asia, from Hadrian’s Wall in the north of England right down to northern Africa, from western Spain right into Syria and beyond. The chapters first introduce the grammar point with explanations in English with example sentences in Latin elucidating the points. All Latin teachers who use this course supplement the grammatical content to a greater or lesser extent, and who hasn’t been frustrated by the fact that many of the chapters introduce a new grammatical concept and then give a load of exercises about something completely different?

While the Cambridge Latin Course has started so many students off on their love-affair with Latin, it was never enough to carry them all the way to GCSE and beyond without some serious supplementation on the part of the teacher. Just to make it a bit more of a ‘lesson’ I’ll pause it and get them to try and explain the last scene to me in Latin. If you are also looking to explore other ancient Mediterranean languages or already know some Ancient Greek, this would be a great option for you.The book starts by introducing a new family, a Roman aristocrat, Salvius, who is a successful lawyer and senator in Rome. In the 5th edition, Marcus and Quartus were removed, their feud was replaced by an argument between Quintus and Lucia. An example I give in my book is the Latin word ‘candidus,’ the adjective meaning white, pure, unvarnished. Let’s go on to your next book, which is a guide to how to learn the language for young pupils, or even adults, maybe. If you go back to both Greek and Latin, not the earliest languages of all time, but two of the earliest languages in which a sophisticated, huge body of literature, culture and all the rest of it is begun or expanded, you have the foundation stone, and you can start to build all the way up to the modern day.

Clemens' efforts to establish his business and his initiation into the worship of Isis form a significant sub-plot in Book 2. The more traditional grammar and translation methodologies used by Latin teachers have been attacked for decades since the progressive movement in education decided that everything that smacked of The Old Days was A Bad Idea. The Teacher support section includes an outline of the pedagogy of the CLC, information on technical requirements for use of this web site, and an image gallery of downloadable CLC line drawings. I then spun out the story of Quintus grieving her loss and ultimately finding her again as a replacement to the thoroughly tiresome stories in Book 2, all of which I ditched. The book follows a simple structure: each chapter first briefly explains a point of grammar such as the genitive of quality or final clauses. Each chapter ends with a bit of Roman history, told in simple, sometimes facetious, terms - intended to appeal to school-age learners and, for an adult like me, the weakest part of the book. It is difficult reading Greek and Latin but you can look across just like that and it makes it very, very, easy.

To complement the book, you can listen to the audiobook version and work through the online course video course. Featuring a glossary for quick reference and comprehension questions, the book also includes a full explanation of language points and grammar practice exercises. However, the book leaves the reader wondering whether Caecilius' son, Quintus, survives, as he indeed does, along with the slave, Clemens, and (in the fifth edition) Lucia. I understand I can change my preference through my account settings or unsubscribe directly from any marketing communications at any time.

If you are not comfortable with a book entirely written in Latin and wish to have a translation, then Assimil is the book for you. If you want to get really good at Latin and master it well, one of the best things to do is follow a good Latin prose composition coursebook and start practicing your writing skills. I have learned an immense amount from translating into Latin as it helped me find out what you I didn’t know or hadn’t noticed in reading. To find out about other components in this course, please contact us and we'd be very happy to advise. It comes with a full Latin-English vocabulary and is available as a paperback, e‑book, and audiobook.Various acquaintances of the emperor, including Glabrio, an advisor to the emperor, are introduced, as well as the emperor himself. Classical culture invented so many of the great eternal stories: the myths, the Odyssey, the Iliad, the Aeneid. Then there are ones like the Cambridge Latin Course, which fall over themselves to be nice and easygoing and therefore useless. If, like me, you are using the book as a refresher for Latin learned long ago, you can probably manage with just this book.
